Mohawks Fall on Opening Night 11-3

By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

The Mohawks lost the regular season opener on the road to the Utica Blue Sox last night by a score of 11-3. Toby Welk (Penn State Berks) gave the Mohawks a short 1-0 lead in the fourth, with a leadoff home run, but the Blue Sox rallied for 5 in the fourth, 4 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth to seal the blowout win.

Welk and Ben Rhodes (Herkimer) were the lone bright spots for the Mohawks as Welk had 2 hits, including the home run and Rhodes reached base 3 times with a walk, a single and a double.

Brendan McNerney (RPI) started for the Mohawks and pitched 3 scoreless innings before unraveling in the fourth. McNerney took the loss after allowing 5 runs on on 4 hits with 3 walks and 6 strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.

The Mohawks return to action Saturday night as they host the Saugerties Stallions at 6:35. The first 500 fans receive a magnet schedule courtesy of Sticker Mule. It’s the first fireworks night of the season, sponsored by McDonald’s and DHL and it’s Fonda Night.
