Shaw Becomes Highest Pick In Team History

In Awe of Shaw The MLB Draft began Sunday and 2021 Mohawk Matt Shaw of Maryland was selected with the 13th overall pick by the Chicago Cubs. The pick was the highest a former Mohawk and Maryland player have ever been drafted. Justin Foscue (2018-Mississippi State) was the previous high as he was selected with the 14th overall pick in 2020 by the Texas Rangers. Ian Anderson was on the Mohawks roster in 2016, but the Vanderbilt commit was drafted and signed by the Braves before he could don a Mohawks jersey. Shaw batted .369 for the Mohawks in 2021 with 9 home runs, 12 doubles, 28 RBI and stole 15 bases. He was the Cape Cod MVP last summer with the Bourne Braves and this spring with Maryland he hit .341 with 20 doubles, 24 home runs and 69 RBI. This includes a 507 ft. home run and the #1 Play on Sportscenter with a diving catch/double play.

Draft Day 2/3 Four more Mohawks were taken on Day 2 of the MLB Draft. RHP Teddy McGraw (2020-21 Wake Forest) was selected in the 3rd Round by Seattle Mariners. RHP Cam Minacci (2021-Wake Forest) was selected in the 6th Round by the Los Angeles Angeles. RHP Jason Savacool (2020-Maryland) was selected in the 6th Round by the St. Louis Cardinals and RHP Chris Barraza (New Mexico State/Arizona) was selected in the 10th Round by the Los Angeles Angeles. Dylan Carmouche (Mississippi State/Tulane) was selected in the 15th Round by the San Francisco Giants.
