Mohawks Win 7th Straight, Defeat Blue Sox 11-2

The Mohawks won their seventh game in a row on Wednesday night with an 11-2 victory over the Utica Blue Sox at Murnane Field.

The game was scoreless through the first 2 innings as Mohawks starter James Salemme (Union) was able to get out of a bases loaded jam with just one out in the second.

The Mohawks scored single runs in the third and fourth innings to take a 2-0 lead.

In the third, Keith Jones (Washington State) hit a one out double and scored on a Riley Langerman (Maryland) single and in the fourth, Jake Reinisch (Wake Forest) walked, stole second and scored on a pair of wild pitches by Blue Sox starter Eric Steensma (Tennessee-Martin).

Utica tied the game at 2 in the bottom of the fifth as a pair of unearned runs scored, but the Mohawks took the lead back in the sixth as Matt Shaw (Maryland) a 2-run home run (which he also did the previous night).

The Mohawks then exploded for 5 runs in the seventh to take a 9-2 lead as they were aided by 2 Blue Sox errors, and they added 2 more runs in the ninth to cap the 11-2 victory.

Matt Shaw ended up going 2-for-4 with a home run and 4 RBI.

Eli Giles (Alabama) picked up the win in relief to improve to 2-0. He went 3 innings, allowed 2 unearned runs on 3 hits and 1 walk with 2 strikeouts. James Salemme went the first 3.1 innings allowing 1 hit and 3 walks with 2 strikeouts. Gavin Stellpflug (Maryland) allowed 1 hit in 0.2 innings, Von Baker (Cornell) went 1.1 innings allowing 1 walk and Connor Brandon (Toledo) recorded the final 2 outs with 1 strikeout.

Eric Steensma took the loss for Utica falling to 1-1. He went the first 6 innings allowing 4 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.

The Mohawks will stay on the road as they’ll face the Oneonta Outlaws tomorrow night at 7:05.
