Big seventh inning propels Mohawks to 10-4 win over Stallions

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – After a tight first six innings, the Amsterdam Mohawks (14-2) erupted for six runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Saugerties Stallions (10-4) 10-4 on Saturday night at Cantine Field.
The Stallions struck first in the bottom of the first thanks to an RBI double from Kip Fougerouse (Indiana). Saugerties held a 1-0 lead until Amsterdam broke through thanks to an RBI single by Keith Jones (Washington State) in the top of the sixth to even the score at one.
In the top of the seventh, the flood gates opened for the Mohawks. Jack Walker (Indiana) was one strike away from getting out of the inning with the score 1-1 but walked Kai Roberts (Utah) and that started a string of four-straight walks for Walker. Then, a big double from Jones cleared the bases and capped off a six-run inning for Amsterdam.
Amsterdam wasn’t done piling on the runs yet. In the eighth, the Mohawks added three more runs. CJ Funk (Pittsburgh) doubled to drive in Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee State) and Matt Shaw (Maryland). Then, another double from Roberts knocked in Funk to up the score to 10-1 Amsterdam.
The Stallions did add three runs in the ninth to cut the score to 10-4 Amsterdam. Gunner Gouldsmith (Washington State) led off the inning with a home run. Then, Tyler Kelder (Florida Atlantic) double and scored on a Fougerouse sacrifice fly. Then, Andrew Wilhite (Minnesota) crushed a home run for the Stallions’ fourth run.
Ian Cooke (UConn) earned the win for Amsterdam in relief. Cooke went three innings, giving up two hits and no runs, while striking out five and walking one. Aaron Cohn (Fairleigh Dickinson) suffered the loss. Cohn pitched an inning and two thirds and gave up four hits and three runs.
Bryce Reimer (Bucknell) started for Saugerties and went five innings, while giving up two hits, one walk and striking out two. Cole Patten (Seton Hall) toed the rubber to start for Amsterdam and also pitched five innings, allowing one runs on one hit, while striking four and walking one.
Amsterdam hits the road again tomorrow night as the Mohawks take on Mohawk Valley.
