Shaw homers as Smith, Mohawks, shutout Blue Sox, 2-0

By Ethan Frank

Amsterdam, New York - The Amsterdam Mohawks improved to 16-4 with a 2-0 win over the Utica Blue Sox (10-6) at Rao Family Stadium. In the team's third matchup of the season, pitching told the story. Nick Smith (Evansville) started and got the win for Amsterdam with five shutout innings of two-hit ball. Starting with one out in the 4th inning, four Mohawks combined to retire 15 straight Blue Sox over a 5 inning span.

Offensively, the two teams combined for only six hits, but the biggest one of the night came off the bat of Matt Shaw (Maryland) who launched a two-run homer to right field in the 4th inning. That was all Amsterdam needed to rebound from last night's 1-0 loss in Saugerties.

Matt Gonzales (Barton) got the save in an eventful 9th inning, which included a walk and a bang-bang call at 3rd base for the second out of the 9th. The victory marked the Mohawks' 3rd shutout victory of the season. Amsterdam hosts the Stallions tomorrow night for the two teams' 3rd matchup in the last four days.
