Mohawks Score 5 in 5th, Defeat Stallions 10-1

SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – The Amsterdam Mohawks (20-5) exploded for a 10-1 win over the Saugerties Stallions (16-7) on Sunday night at Cantine Field.

 

Amsterdam raced out to an early lead in the first thanks to sloppy defense by the Stallions. A CJ Funk (Pittsburgh) single scored Matt Shaw (Maryland) to open up the scoring. Errors helped the Mohawks scratch across their second run.

 

The Stallions did add a run in the bottom of the first. Josh Stevenson (LSU) singled to score Gene Napolitano (Marist), which cut the Amsterdam lead to 2-1.

 

Two more runs were added in the top of the third by Amsterdam. Bryce Eblin (Alabama) had an RBI single that knocked in both Shaw and Funk to up the lead to 4-1 for the Mohawks.

 

The fifth inning is where the game was broken open as Amsterdam knocked in five runs. Runs were scored by Keith Jones (Washington State), Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee State), Funk, Eblin and Brett Young (Siena). Amsterdam chases Stallions’ starter Andres Auffant (Franklin Pierce) from the game in that inning. Amsterdam made the score 9-1 at the end of the fifth.

 

Another run was added by the Mohawks in the top of the seventh to make the score 10-1, which is where the score held.

 

Ian Cooke (UConn) earned the win for the Mohawks, going four innings, giving up one run on two hits. Cooke also struck out six batters and only surrendered one walk. The loss went to Auffant, who pitched four plus innings and gave up six earned runs on seven hits. Auffant also walked one and struck out three batters.

 

Amsterdam takes on Albany Tuesday night and the Stallions return to action Tuesday night at Glens Falls for a doubleheader. First pitch of game one is at 5:00 and you can stream both games live on Facebook.
