In a rematch of the 2021 PGCBL Championship, the Mohawks prevailed in their home opener of the 2022 season with a 10-3 win over the Saugerties Stallions.
Gage Miller led off the first inning with a double and scored on an error to put Amsterdam up 1-0.
Saugerties tied it at 1 in the second inning when Mason Speaker scored on an error and took a 2-1 lead in the third when Jahlani Rogers scored on a Brandon Fish groundout.
The Mohawks tied it at 2 in the bottom of the third as Josh Overbeek singled to score Brett Coker.
The Stallions retook the lead in the top of the fourth. Two walks and a single given up by Cole Cheatham loaded the bases, so Keith Griffin turned the ball over to Jack Syivia who plunked TJ Adams to force in a run making in 3-2 Stallions.
The Mohawks erupted in the bottom of the fourth inning with 7 runs. Zach Gardiner led off the inning with a double. Nick Giamarusti followed with a single and Michael O’Shaughnessy drove them both in with a double. Jacob Hand then hit a 2-run home run. Gage Miller singled and scored on a Cade Bush single and Hunter Thomas hit a 2-run double that scored Miller and Josh Overbeek as the Mohawks took a 9-3 lead.
The Mohawks scored their final run of the game in the fifth as Jacob Hand hit his second home run in as many innings as the Mohawks took a 10-3 lead.
The Mohawks bullpen retired 14 in a row before allowing a ninth inning double to Alex Rodriguez.
Cole Cheatham started for the Mohawks allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 5 walks with 5 strikeouts. Jack Syivia was the winning pitcher improving to 1-0 as he went 2.1 hitless innings with 2 strikeouts. Santhosh Gottam went the next 2 innings retiring all 6 batters he faced, picking up 3 strikeouts along the way and Nolan Lamere closed it out allowing 1 hit in the ninth with 1 strikeout.
Alex Canney took the loss for the Stallions falling to 0-1. He allowed 8 runs (7 earned), on 12 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts in 3.2 innings pitched.
Amsterdam’s offence racked up 16 hits and 8 extra base hits. Jacob Hand drove in 3 runs with a pair of home runs. Cade Bush had 4 hits with 1 RBI and 1 run scores. Gage Miller had 3 hits, 2 doubles, 2 runs scored and stole a base and Zach Gardiner hit 2 doubles and scored once.
The Mohawks improved to 2-0 on the season and will now travel to Saugerties on Sunday to face the Stallions again.
