Six players recorded multiple hits as the Mohawks defeated the Saugerties Stallions 16-5 in a run shortened seven inning game on Sunday at Cantine Field.
Saugerties took an early lead Sunday as they scored twice in the first inning. TJ Adams led off with a double and scored on a wild pitch, while Jahlani Rogers scored on a Mason Speaker sac-fly.
Amsterdam got going in the second inning by scoring 4 runs, all coming with 2 outs in the inning. Zach Gardiner doubled and scored on a Hunter Thomas single. Gage Miller drove in Thomas with a single and Jacob Hand hit a 2-run single that scored Frankie Marinelli and Gage Miller.
The Stallions battled back in the bottom of the second as Alex Rodriguez scored on a Brett Heckert single and Jahlani Rogers hit a double that drove in Heckert, which tied the game at 4.
The Mohawks retook the lead in the top of the third with Cade Bush scoring on a Zach Gardiner sac-fly and Hunter Thomas hitting a double that scored Josh Overbeek making it 6-4 Mohawks.
Amsterdam then piled it on in the fourth inning with 6 runs. After a hit batter and 2 walks, Nick Giamarusti walked to force in Brett Coker. Zach Gardiner then singled to drive in Cade Bush and Hunter Thomas walked to force in Josh Overbeek. Frankie Marinelli then reached on a fielder’s choice and Nick Giamarusti scored. Gage Miller hit a sac-fly to right that brought in Zach Gardiner and Jacob Hand doubled to bring in Hunter Thomas making in 12-4.
Each team added a run in the fifth as Amsterdam Zach Gardiner singled and Nick Giamarusti was able to score on an error by the center fielder. Saugerties took advantage of some wild pitches as Alex Rodriguez walked and advanced home on 3 different wild pitches to make it 13-5.
The Mohawks put the game away in the seventh as Cade Bush led off with a double. Josh Overbeek followed with a walk and Nick Giamarusti was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Zach Gardiner drew a walk to force home Bush. Following a pitching change, Hunter Thomas hit a sac-fly that drove in Josh Overbeek and Gage Miller hit a sac-fly to score Nick Giamarusti making it 16-5.
Gage Miller went 3-for-4 with 3 RBI a stolen base and a run scored, Jacob Hand had 2 hits with a double and 3 RBI, Zach Gardiner went 3-for-3 with a double, a walk, 3 RBI and 2 runs scored. Hunter Thomas was 2-for-3 with a double, a walk, 4 RBI and 2 runs scored. Cade Bush and Josh Overbeek each had 2 hits, a double, and scored 3 times.
Jacob Lapham started and went the first 2 innings allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and no strikeouts. Luis Misla went the next 3 innings and got the win (1-0) as he allowed 1 run on 2 hits with 4 walks and 8 strikeouts. Kyle Lesler went 1 inning allowing 1 hit with 2 strikeouts and Cade Citelli pitched the final inning, retiring the side in order with 2 strikeouts.
Praxie Vigil took the loss for Saugerties (0-1) allowing 6 runs on 9 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts.
Amsterdam improves to 3-0 and will host the Glens Falls Dragons Monday night at Rao Family Stadium.
