Six Run Sixth Leads Mohawks Over Dragons, 9-5

The Mohawks scored 6 runs in the sixth to defeat the Glens Falls Dragons 9-5 on Monday Night at Shuttleworth Park.

The game was scoreless until the fifth inning when Eddie Yamin scored on a single by Mario Cubello off Mohawks starter Arlon Butts to give the Dragons a 1-0 lead.

Glens Falls added 1 more in the sixth as Martin Marintchev hit a leadoff double off reliver Von Baker and scored on a Cory Listing double to give the Dragons a 2-0 lead.

The Mohawks offence came to live in the bottom of the sixth. Brett Coker led off with a single and Cade Bush was hit by a pitch. Josh Overbeek tried to lay down a sac-bunt but reached on an error that allowed Brett Coker to score. Glens Falls made a pitching change and then back-to-back walks to Nick Giamarusti and Zach Gardiner allowed Cade Bush to score. Hunter Thomas followed with a 2-run double scoring Overbeek and Giamarusti. After another pitching change, Zach Gardiner scored on a wild pitch and Hunter Thomas scored on an error by the first basemen to give the Mohawks a 6-2 lead.

In the seventh, Nick Giamarusti singled, stole second and scored on a Zach Gardiner single to make it 7-2.

Both teams scored a pair of runs in the eighth as Glens Falls took advantage of a pair of Amsterdam errors. The Mohawks scored on an RBI single by Josh Overbeek and a Zach Gardiner drove in Cade Bush with a groundout to make it 9-4.

In the ninth Glens Falls scored a run as Eddie Yamin scored on a Mario Cubello sac-fly, but Nolan Lamere was able to shut the door to secure the 9-5 win.

Arlon Butts went the first 5 innings allowing 1 unearned run on 5 hits with no walks and 9 strikeouts. Von Baker was the winning pitcher (1-0) allowing 1 run on 1 hit in the sixth inning with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Carson Cotugno pitched 2 innings allowing 2 unearned runs on 2 hits with 2 walks and 5 strikeouts and Nolan Lamere allowed 1 run in the ninth on 2 hits with 1 strikeout.

Jake Washock (0-1) took the loss for Glens Falls as he allowed 3 runs on 3 hits with 1 walk and 4 strikeouts. Despite the loss, Glens Falls did end up outhitting Amsterdam 11-10.

The Mohawks move to 4-0 on the season and will host the Watertown Rapids at home on Tuesday.
