SAUGERTIES, N.Y. – The Mohawks bullpen went 6 scoreless, hitless innings to preserve a 3-2 victory over the Saugerties Stallions on Saturday night at Cantine Field to improve to 7-0.
Cole Cheatham (Mississippi State) started for Amsterdam and went the first 3 innings allowing 2 runs on 3 hits with 5 walks and 6 strikeouts. The bullpen took over in the fourth. Von Baker (Cornell) went the next 3 innings allowing no hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. Collin Brougham (South Alabama) went 2 perfect innings with 2 strikeouts and Nolan Lamere (Clarke) earned his first save by pitching a hitless ninth.
The Mohawks took a 1-0 lead in the first as Josh Overbeek (Pitt) singled home Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee State), but the Stallions immediately tied it up as Jahlani Rogers scored on a Jake Skrine base hit.
Amsterdam went back in front in the second as Gage Miller (Bishop State) hit a 2-run single to score Frankie Marinelli (Manhattan) and Nick Giamarusti (Pitt) to put Amsterdam up 3-1.
The final run of the game came in the third inning as Colin Mackle hit an RBI single to score Brandon Fish to cut the Mohawks lead to 3-2. After that it was stellar pitching and defense the rest of the way.
Von Baker was the winning pitcher to improve to 2-0 and the Mohawks improved to 7-0. Bryan Boully (Florida Atlantic) took the loss for Saugerties falling to 0-1 as the Stallions fell to 1-6.
Boully went the first 2 innings for Saugerties allowing 3 runs on 3 hits with 4 walks and 1 strikeout. Praxie Vigil went the next 5 innings allowing no runs on 3 hits and James Reilly went the last 2 allowing no runs on 1 hit.
The Mohawks are on the road Sunday to face the Booneville Baseball Club and return home on Monday to face the Albany Dutchmen at 6:35.
