Miller, Coker Take Down Dutchmen, 11-5

Gage Miller (Bishop State) and Brett Coker (Middle Tennessee State) combined for 5 hits, 2 home runs and 7 RBI in the Mohawks 11-5 victory over the Albany Dutchmen at Keenholts Park on Monday.

Miller and Coker were the 1-2 hitters in the lineup and their effect was felt immediately. Gage Miller took the second pitch of the game and turned it into his fourth home run of the season. Brett Coker followed with a walk and scored on a Cade Bush (Florida State) sac-fly to put Amsterdam up 2-0.

Albany answered back in the bottom of the first as David Silva Jr. (Ohio Dominican) walked and scored on a Nick Schwartz (Southern New Hampshire) base hit to cut the lead to 2-1.

In the third inning the Mohawks capitalized on some sloppy defense, which was a key factor throughout the game as the Dutchmen committed 6 errors and the Mohawks, 3. Mark Black (Wake Forest) walked and Cade Bush reached on an error. A botched pickoff attempt led to Mark Black scoring and newcomer, Paul Winland (Florida SouthWestern) hit a sac-fly to score Bush making it 4-1 Mohawks.

The Dutchmen came back with a pair of runs in the fourth as Danny Rodgers (Rutgers) walked and scored on an Anthony Raimo, Jr. double. Raimo then on an error to cut the Mohawks lead to 4-3.

It stayed 4-3 until the seventh when, with runners on the corners, Zach Gardiner (Marshall) was thrown out trying to steal second and Mark Black waited for the throw and took home to put Amsterdam up 5-3.

In the eighth, Gage Miller reached on an error and Brett Coker hit a 2-run home run to put the Mohawks up 7-3 and in the ninth it was Miller and Coker hitting back-to-back 2-run singles that put the Mohawks up 11-3.

In the bottom of the ninth, Alex Brill (Ohio Dominican) hit a 2-run home run, but Chris Suter (Union) ended the rally there to secure the 11-5 victory for the Mohawks 20th win of the season (20-3), while the Dutchmen fell to 13-8.

Arlon Butts (Rend Lake) started for the Mohawks and went the first 4 innings allowing 3 runs (2 earned), on 3 hits and 2 walks with 2 strikeouts. Jack Syivia (St. Lawrence) went 2 innings allowing 1 hit and 2 walks with 1 strikeout. Santhosh Gottam (Brown) went 2 innings allowing 1 hit with 1 strikeout and Chris Sutter allowed 2 runs on 1 hit and 1 walk with 1 strikeout.

Gage Miller was 3-for-6 with a home run, 3 RBI and 3 runs scored, newly named PGCBL Player of the Week, Brett Coker, went 2-for-5 with a home run, 4 RBI, 2 runs scored and a walk.

The Mohawks are off on Tuesday and travel to Oneonta on Wednesday. The Dutchmen are off until Thursday when they will travel to Amsterdam to play the Mohawks.
