The Amsterdam Mohawks met the Oneonta Outlaws for the second time in five days on Saturday at Rao Family Stadium. The result was the exact same as the first meeting, a 4-1 triumph for Amsterdam.
Tyler Sausville (New Haven) started his second game of the season for the Mohawks, facing his former team from last summer. The left hander began the game with a scoreless inning.
Andrew Rubayo (Quinnipiac) was on the mound for the Outlaws. His second start of the summer didn’t get off to an ideal start. Amsterdam’s leadoff hitter, Gage Miller (Bishop State CC), blasted a 3-2 pitch to left field for a solo home run. That home run put him past Mike Spina (Cincinnati) and Cody Kulp (Shippensburg) for the fourth most home runs in Mohawks history.
In the third inning, Jalen Debose (Florida Atlantic) was walked by Andrew Rubayo to get on base. After Debose stole second, Gage Miller knocked one out to left field once again for a two run shot. Miller’s second home run in as many at-bats gave him his third of the season and 12th as a Mohawk. Additionally, that hit was his eighth hit of the summer and 68th with Amsterdam, passing Joe Mariano (Siena) for the 10th most hits in Mohawks history.
A defensive battle ensued as Asmterdam’s Sausville retired 13 straight batters and didn’t allow a hit until the sixth inning. That turned out to be his last inning of an impressive outing. The former Outlaw allowed no runs and just two hits, while walking one and striking out eight.
In the bottom half of the sixth, Gage Miller got on base again with a walk. A single from Zach Eldred (Brockport) advanced Miller to third. With runners on the corners, Luke Longo (NJIT) sent Miller home on a fielder’s choice to extend the Amsterdam lead to 4-0.
In the seventh inning, Maximilian Ramirez (Niagara) replaced Tyler Sausville for his second appearance of the season. A single from Caden Marsters (Erskine) and walks to Jack Hopko (Rhode Island) and Anthony Barone (Oswego State) loaded up the bases for the Outlaws. Logan Waldschmidt (State College of Florida) was the third consecutive batter walked by Ramirez, driving in Marsters for Oneonta’s first run of the game. Ramirez was pulled after that, lasting ⅔ innings, allowing two hits, three walks and a run. Jack Seppings (Brown) came in for his third appearance of the young season. With the bases loaded again, the right hander struck out Ryan Leary (Wagner) to limit the damage done in the seventh. Seppings pitched through the eighth, going 1 ⅓ innings with one hit allowed and two strikeouts.
Oneonta’s starter, Andrew Rubayo, pitched all the way through the seventh, allowing seven hits, conceding four runs and two walks while recording four strikeouts.
Patrick Dengler (Saint Rose), who pitched an inning against the Mohawks in the first meeting between the two teams, entered in the eighth for the Outlaws. The rising sophomore walked two batters but got out of the inning without conceding a run.
Down to the final three outs, Jack Brodsky (Tampa) made an appearance for a second consecutive game, recording the save with just one hit allowed and two strikeouts in the ninth to give the Mohawks a 4-1 win.
Gage Miller finished 2-for-2 with two home runs, three runs batted in and two walks. Zach Eldred was the other Mohawk with two hits, going 2-for-3 as the designated hitter.
Andrew Rubayo suffered his second defeat of the summer after losing to Glens Falls six days prior. The loss drops Oneonta to 3-4 on the season.
Tyler Sausville improved to 2-0 after his opening day win against Albany. The Mohawks remain undefeated at 7-0 with the victory. Next up is a trip to Watertown for the second of eight matchups with the Rapids. Amsterdam prevailed 14-2 in the first meeting. First pitch from Toyota Park is scheduled for 5:00 on Sunday.
