What was supposed to be a doubleheader, turned into a rain shortened single game as the Mohawks defeated the Saugerties Stallions 8-1 at Cantine Field on Sunday.
Evan Siary (Mississippi State) started for Amsterdam and retired the first 8 batters in a row before yielding a hit in the third inning. The first 2 innings saw Siary retire the side on 7 pitches each as his pitch count after 2 innings was only 14.
The Mohawks opened the scoring in the third inning as Mason Swinney (Alabama) reached on a single and Bruer Webster (Utah) reached on a bunt single, which set the stage for Gage Miller (Bishop State) to hit a 2-run single to left field to make it 2-0.
In the fourth, Bruer Webster stepped in with the bases loaded and was hit by a pitch to force In Dakota Duffalo (Utah). Gage Miller was next up and unloaded the bases with a 3-run single which made it 6-0.
In the bottom of the fourth, Andrew Amato (Delaware) took the first pitch from Siary and homered to right to make it 6-1. That would be the only run Siary would allow in the game.
In the fifth, Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) drove in Luke Longo (NJIT) with a single and Jalen DeBose (FAU) hit an RBI double to score Jaxson West (Alabama) making it 8-1.
The game started in a rain delay, and in the seventh inning the rain returned which put an early end to the day.
Evan Siary pitched the entire game for the Mohawks and improved to 4-0 as he went 6.0 innings allowing 1 run on 3 hits with no walks and 6 strikeouts. Xavier Rodriguez (Webber) took the loss falling to 0-1 as he went 3.2 innings allowing 4 runs (2 earned) on 5 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts.
Gage Miller drove in 5 runs and moved up the Mohawks record book as he passed Josh Nethaway and Vince Riggi on the Mohawks RBI list to move up to fourth with 62. Miller also stole 2 bases, which passed Mel Rojas, Jr., Mark Onorati and Blake Cannady and tied him with Kyle Barrett and Hunter Tackett for third on the Mohawks All-Time list with 23.
The Mohawks improve to 23-1 with their 14th straight win, while the Stallions fell to 11-8.
Amsterdam will be off on Monday and travel to Glens Falls on Tuesday to face the Dragons at 7:00.
