Brandon Peterson went six scoreless innings without allowing a hit before Von Baker sealed a combined no-hitter for the Amsterdam Mohawks in a 12-0 victory over the Albany Dutchmen on Tuesday night at Rao Family Stadium.
Brandon Peterson (NJIT) wasted no time in his sixth start of the season and second against Albany, striking out the side in the first inning to set the tone.
Danny Iglesias (St. Thomas) made his first start for the Dutchmen and seventh appearance of the season. While the Mohawks failed to score in the opening frame, the second inning was a different story. Zach Eldred (Brockport) recorded a leadoff single. After eventually advancing to third, Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) drove in Eldred on a sacrifice fly to left field, giving Amsterdam a 1-0 lead.
In the third inning, Jared Johnson (Brown) and Bruer Webster (Utah) were walked and a perfectly executed bunt by Marek Houston (Wake Forest) in between loaded up the bases. Then, the third walk of the inning to Jaxson West (Alabama/Florida State) brought Johnson home from third, doubling Amsterdam’s lead. Danny Iglesias’ night came to an end after the third, allowing two runs on two hits with three walks and one strikeout.
Brandon Peterson retired the first 10 batters faced before finally walking Vince Venditti (Saint Rose) in the fourth. In the bottom of the fourth, Jake Memoli (Fairfield) replaced Iglesias on the mound, making his sixth appearance and second against Amsterdam. Memoli first faced Bryce Hubbard, who singled to lead off the inning. Max Martin (Rutgers) was walked to put two runners on. After a passed ball allowed Hubbard and Martin to advance, Luke Zeisloft (Maryland) delivered a single on the ground to the left side, bringing Hubbard home to make it 3-0. Zeisloft stole second to put both runners in scoring position and a single from Jared Johnson brought Martin and Zeisloft home to give the Mohawks a 5-0 lead. Bruer Webster reached on a bunt to put runners on the corners. That was followed by a Luke Longo (NJIT) home run to left field, his fifth of the season, extending the lead to 8-0. Jaxson West doubled and eventually advanced to third on a passed ball. Mason Swinney (Alabama), the tenth batter of the inning, reached on an error as West came home from third to cap off a seven-run fourth and give Amsterdam a 9-0 lead. Memoli was taken out after the inning, giving up seven runs (six earned) on six hits with a walk and a strikeout.
Devin Campbell (Oswego) entered for the Dutchmen in the fifth, appearing in his sixth game and second against the Mohawks. Amsterdam’s offense didn’t slow down as Maximus Martin notched the second home run of the game over the left field wall to make it 10-0. Then, Luke Zeisloft doubled for his second hit of the night while Jared Johnson and Bruer Webster were walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Eddie Yamin (Dayton) hit a sacrifice fly to deep center field that resulted in both Zeisloft and Johnson coming home before Webster was tagged out heading to third for the final out of the inning, making the score 12-0.
Brandon Peterson wrapped up an impressive outing in the sixth by ending the inning with a strikeout, his 10th of the contest. In six shutout innings, the right-hander didn’t allow a hit and only walked three batters.
Devin Campbell kept the Mohawks off the board in the sixth for the first time since the opening frame. Campbell allowed three hits and three runs with three walks and two strikeouts in two innings of work.
Von Baker (Cornell) made his eighth appearance of the season, coming in for Brandon Peterson in the seventh. A combined no-hitter was achieved as Baker retired the side in order to give Amsterdam a 12-0 win in seven innings.
Jaxson West and Luke Zeisloft recorded multiple hits as the Mohawks recorded 11 on the night. No errors were committed by Amsterdam while Albany had three.
Danny Iglesias suffered the loss, dropping him to 1-2 this summer. Albany is now 10-18 and hosts Saugerties on Wednesday at 6:35.
Brandon Peterson moved to 3-0 with the win and the Mohawks improved to 28-2-1. Amsterdam is off on Wednesday before traveling to Oneonta to take on the Outlaws on Thursday at 7:00.
