The Amsterdam Mohawks were firing on all cylinders as they defeated the Oneonta Outlaws 7-1 on Thursday night at Damaschke Field.
Nine players recorded the eleven Mohawks hits, only Jalen DeBose (FAU) and Carlos Martinez (Pitt) recorded multiple hits, while Carson Pierce (Oklahoma), Maximilian Ramirez (Niagara), Ryan Taffe (Fairfield) and Colin Maloney (Rhode Island) combined to allow 1 run and 4 total hits to the Outlaws.
The Mohawks opened up the scoring in the third inning as Marek Houston (Wake Forest) and Jalen DeBose hit back-to-back sac-flies to score Mason Swinney (Alabama) and Carlos Martinez to make it 2-0.
In the fifth, Jaxson West hit a rocket off the shortstop’s glove that went into left field, the 2-run single allowed Marek Houston and Carlos Martinez to score.
In the seventh, Luke Longo (NJIT) hit the only extra base hit of the game as his 10th double of the season drove in Marek Houston. Cam Gurney (Utah) and Bryce Hubbard (Mississippi State) followed with RBOI singles which drove in DeBose and Longo making it 7-0.
Carson Pierce improved to 2-1 on the season as the Mohawks improved to 29-2-1. Pierce went the first 4 innings, allowing no runs on 2 hits and 1 walk with 3 strikeouts. Maximilian Ramirez followed with 3 hitless innings allowing 3 walks with 3 strikeouts. All 3 walks occurred in the seventh inning, which loaded the bases, but Ramirez rebounded and struck out Connor Roche (Wagner) to keep Oneonta off the board. Ryan Taffe pitched a hitless eighth walking one and striking out 3.
The Outlaws, facing a 2-hit shutout, finally got on the board in the ninth as Colin Maloney surrendered 2 hits and 2 walks as Caden Marsters (Erskine) hit an RBI single to left field driving in Dakota Britt (Herkimer) to make it 7-1, but the next batter grounded into a 5-4-3 double play to end the game.
Jordan Goble (Herkimer) took the loss falling to 0-1 as the Outlaws fell to 12-18 on the season.
The Mohawks are off on Friday and will host the Watertown Rapids on Saturday night in Amsterdam at 6:35.
