It was a rough night for the Mohawks as the Oneonta Outlaws poured a seven run first inning on the Mohawks en route to a 10-4 victory Friday night at Shuttleworth Park.
Tanner Hardin (Wofford) set the tone immediately as he doubled off Mohawks starter Justus Agosto (North Alabama) to lead off the game. A walk and an Ethan Glossa (Herkimer) single put Oneonta on the board, 1-0. Jack Hopko (Rhode Island) followed with a 2-run single making it 3-0. A hit batter and a walk loaded the bases up for Marco Muses (New Orleans) who also walked to force in a run making it 4-0 and put an early end to Agosto’s night as Mohawks head coach Keith Griffin turned the ball over to Jesse Kuzmich (Coastal Alabama North). Chase Armstrong (Ohio Northern) was the first batter Kuzmich would face and he cleared the bases with a 3-run triple to make it 7-0.
The triple would be the only hit Kuzmich would allow as he settled in and delivered 5 scoreless innings, walking none and striking out 5.
The Mohawks started to chip away scoring runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. Cade Ladehoff (NJIT) hit a 2-out single in the fourth and scored on a Jake Sparks (Marshall) double to make it 7-1. Pete Daniel doubled in the fifth and scored on an error to make it 7-2 and Michael O’Brien (Mississippi State) reached on an error in the sixth and scored on a Manny Santos (Rhode Island) single to make it 7-3.
Amsterdam native Manny Santos also made his Mohawks debut on the mound in the sixth inning, facing college competition for the first time as his high school career wrapped up the previous week. He pitched a perfect frame and recorded his first strikeout.
In the eighth, Oneonta scored off an error with 2 outs in the inning to make it 8-3.
Zach Hernandez (Belmont) pitched the ninth for the Mohawks and issued 3 walks, Jeremy Taggert (Hudson Valley) scored on a passed ball and Jack Bateman (Holy Cross) scored on a Jaden Ross (South Florida) sac-fly to center to make it 10-3.
The Mohawks showed some fight in the ninth, loading the bases and Drake Digiorno (Utah) scored on a passed ball, but a double play and a flyout ended the game as a 10-4 victory for Oneonta.
Joel Hayner (Lynn) was the winning pitcher, improving to 2-0, as the Outlaws improved to 4-1. Justus Agosto took the loss falling to 1-1, while the Mohawks fell to 4-2. Next up, the Mohawks will be playing in Boonville Saturday night, while the Outlaws will host the Albany Baseball Club tomorrow night.
