Mohawks down Dawgs 6-1; win fifth in a row

By Josh McMullen – Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs

Box Score

LITTLE FALLS, NY – It was a true pitcher's duel between the Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs and the Amsterdam Mohawks... until the seventh.

That's when the Mohawks picked up four runs to get their ninth win of the season, 6-1 on Friday night.

The game was scoreless until the bottom of the second, thanks to a bloop RBI single by Luke Nomura (Maplewood, NJ/Fairfield). His lazy fly ball to right field scored Justin Hurd (Warwick, NY/SUNY Albany).

Amsterdam tied it up in the third on a Michael O'Brien (River Ridge, LA/Mississippi State) ground out to score Steven Spalitta (Mandeville, LA/Mississippi State).

The score would stay knotted at one until the sixth, when a balk call brought home Zach Eldred (East Greenbush, NY/SUNY Brockport). The Mohawks would score four in the seventh, thanks to some Diamond Dawgs miscues and were helped along with RBI singles by Evan Haeger (New Hudson, MI/Alabama) and Steven Spalitta and a walk to Javar Williams (Dartmouth, MA/Wake Forest) with the bases loaded.

That would be all the Amsterdam bullpen would need, keeping Mohawk Valley scoreless the rest of the way to close the door, Ben Huckans (Amsterdam, NY/St. John Fisher) picked up the final six outs to earn the save and seal the win.

Justus Agosto (Langhorne, PA/North Alabama) got the win for Amsterdam (9-2). Keegan Burke (Amherst, NY/St. Michaels) took the loss for Mohawk Valley (4-6).

Amsterdam heads back to Shuttleworth Park on Saturday to take on the Oneonta Outlaws. Mohawk Valley will travel to the Robert Smith Sports Complex to take on the Boonville Lumberjacks on Saturday, before coming back home for a Fathers Day matchup with the Watertown Rapids.
