Box Score Game 1 Game 2
The Mohawks extended their winning streak to 9 games as they defeated the Glens Falls Dragons by scores of 4-3 and 7-1 in a doubleheader at Shuttleworth Park on Friday.
Amsterdam jumped in front in the first inning of the first game. Javar Williams led off with a double and scored as Jackson Natili dropped down a bunt single and scored on the overthrow by the pitcher. Cade Ladehoff followed with a sac-fly to center that scored Evan Haeger to make it 2-0.
Mohawks starter Colin Kidd labored through 2.2 innings. He gave up a leadoff double to Cato Kleinman in the first but left him stranded. He loaded the bases in the second with 1 out in the second but got back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. In the third, Cody Meier reached on an error and he scored as Kidd loaded the bases again and hit Caden Bernardo to force in Meier making it 2-1.
Keith Griffin turned the ball over to Manny Santos at that point and he needed one pitch to get Kyle Wu to ground out to second and leave the bases loaded.
In the fourth, Jackson Natili and Cade Ladehoff hit back-to-back doubles. Pete Daniel was intentionally walked as Ryan Deo went to the bullpen and brought in JJ Trudeau to face Ben Huckans as he hit an RBI single into shallow left to score Natili. A passed ball allowed Cade Ladehoff to score, and the Mohawks took a 4-1 lead.
Glens Falls got one back in the fifth as Odilio Cespedes doubled down the right field line and scored on a Jack Griffin single to left making it 4-2.
In the sixth, the Mohawks welcomed back Tyler Figueroa who departed the team after the first week of the season and he picked up right where he left off, slapping an RBI single into left field to make it 5-2.
Or so we thought.
A very alert Ryan Deo immediately came out of the Dragons dugout with the lineup card in hand and pointed out the fact that while Figueroa had physically returned to the team, his name had not yet returned to the lineup card and as a result the Mohawks were called out for an improper batter and the inning ended there with the run coming off the board to keep it 4-2.
Glens Falls would make it interesting in the ninth as Brenden Kline came back out to close out the 6 out save after throwing just 9 pitches in the sixth. Kyle McNeff took the first pitch of the inning and laced a double down the right field line to bring the tying run to the plate. After 2 straight groundouts, Cody Meier singled to right scoring McNeff and moved into scoring position after a bobble in right making it 4-3. However, Kline got Odilio Cespedes to fly out to center on the next pitch to nail down the save and the 4-3 win for the Mohawks in the first game.
Manny Santos earned the win improving to 2-0 on the season, Jayden Hughes took the loss falling to 0-4 and Brendan Kline got save #3.
In Game 2, Glens Falls took a 1-0 lead in the second inning as Caden Bernardo led off with a single to right center and scored as Tre Mariano doubled off the wall in left.
Austin Fawley tied the game at 1 in the bottom of the third as he belted a leadoff home run over the left field fence.
The Mohawks offence went to work in the fourth as every batter in the lineup got a turn at-bat. Tyler Figueroa got the party started with a single to left. He then stole second as Glens Falls reliver Anderson Cowles started to struggle to find the strike zone. Rob Rispoli was hit by a pitch and Aiden Stewart walked on 4 pitches to load the bases. A wild pitch scored Figueroa and Austin Fawley worked a 9-pitch walk to reload the bases. Drake Digiorno was hit to force in Rispoli. Sebastian Harden then hit a slow roller down the first base line as Cowles only play was to first as Stewart scored. A passed ball scored Austin Fawley and Evan Haeger hit an infield single to the second baseman that scored Digiorno for the fifth run of the inning as the Mohawks took a 6-1 lead.
In the sixth Evan Haeger doubled to right and was thrown out trying to extend it into a triple, but not before Sebastian Harden scored to make it 7-1.
Justus Agosto got the win, improving to 3-1. He went the first 4 innings, allowing 1 run on 3 hits and 1 walk with 5 strikeouts. Gage Haley took over in the fifth and after hitting and walking a batter, he settled down to retire the next 9 in a row with 4 strikeouts to earn his first save of the season. Anderson Cowles took the loss for the Dragons falling to 0-1 on the season.
With the sweep the Mohawks improved to 21-3 on the season, while the Dragons fell to 3-20-1.
