Box Score

In a wild ninth inning the Mohawks appeared to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat, only to have the carpet pulled from underneath them as the Boonville Lumberjacks snapped the Mohawks 9-game winning streak with a 7-6 win at Smith Sports Complex on Sunday.

Evan Haeger got the Mohawks on the board first in the first inning with his second home run of the season, but the Lumberjacks answered right back as Joshua Braxton worked a leadoff walk from Mohawks starter Jesse Kuzmich and after a sac-bunt, he scored on a Carter Storti single to tie the game at 1.

Boonville took a 2-1 lead in the second as Aidan Crean reached on a leadoff single and scored on an Ethan Acevedo groundout. The lead was extended to 4-1 in the fourth as Hugo Kohnhorst hit a leadoff double and scored on an error, then Ethan Acevedo singled to center as Joshua Cuniff scored.

Each team scored in the fifth as Luke Szepek hit his first home run of the season for the Mohawks. James Redick hit Hugo Kohnhorst with the bases loaded to force in Joshua Braxton as the Lumberjacks took a 5-2 lead.

Cade Ladehoff hit his second double of the game in the sixth inning and scored as Rob Rispoli reached on an error to cut Boonville’s led to 5-3.

The game appeared to be over in the top of the 9th, with 2-outs a fly ball off the bat of Austin Fawley was about to seal a 5-3 Mohawks loss, but the right fielder dropped the ball. That allowed Rob Rispoli to score, making it 5-4. That set the table for Aiden Stewart to hit a go-ahead 2-run double to right as the Mohawks took a 6-5 lead.

That brings us to the bottom of the ninth. Ben Huckans came back out for the ninth inning after a scoreless eighth, looking to secure the win for himself and the Mohawks. Walddy Rodriguez hit a leadoff single and Joshua Braxton walked to put the pressure on. Huckans rebounded and struck out Jackson Williford and got Carter Storti to groundout bringing the Lumberjacks down to their final out. Garrett Linebeger was down to the final strike of the game and worked a walk to load the bases for pinch-hitter Jax Miller. Down to their final strike again, Jax Miller slapped a single to right that landed in front of the right fielder and got under his glove as Walddy Rodriguez scored the tying run and Joshua Braxton was close behind to score the winning run for the 7-6 victory.

The Mohawks fell to 21-4 as Ben Huckans fell to 2-1. Bruno Cergol got the win as he improved to 1-2 as the Lumberjacks move to 8-16 on the season.
