Home away from home, the Mohawks swept a doubleheader as the road team at Shuttleworth Park on Wednesday over the Albany Baseball Club by scores of 3-2 and 11-3.
Albany got on the board first as Brody Kenneston and Donovan Rhoden hit back-to-back doubles to lead off the second inning. The Mohawks would immediately answer back as Drake Digiorno led off the third with a double to left and scored on a Javar Williams single to right to tie the game at 1.
Amsterdam would take the lead in the fifth as Drake Digiorno worked a leadoff walk and scored on a Steven Spalitta single.
Albany would answer right back as Matt Thorsen homered to right to lead off the bottom of the fifth to tie the game up again at 2.
In the bottom of the sixth Thorsen would come up again with the bases loaded, but Mason Veronezi got the strikeout to end the threat.
In the seventh, Pete Daniel led off the inning with a double down the right field line, he advanced to third on a passed ball and scored as he beat out the throw on a sac-fly to right field off the bat of Austin Fawley to give the Mohawks a 3-2 lead.
Zach Eldred came in for the save in the bottom of the seventh and closed it out with a 1-2-3 inning to secure the 3-2 win.
Justus Agosto pitched the first 4 innings for the Mohawks allowing 2 runs on 3 hits and 7 walks with 1 strikeout. Mason Veronezi got the win improving to 1-1 by going 2 scoreless innings allowing 1 hit and 2 walks with 4 strikeouts.
Matt Sgambati started for Albany allowing 1 run on 3 hits with 1 strikeout. Nick Pappas went 2.1 innings allowing 1 run on 2 hits with 1 walk and 1 strikeout. Matt Thorsen took the loss falling to 0-1 as he went 1.2 innings allowing 1 run on 1 hit and 2 walks.
In the second game, Albany again took an early lead as Jordan Daniels led off the game with an infield single to short and Luke Filippi singled to left. They both scored as Brooks Carter singled up the middle that deflected off Mohawks starter Gage Haley’s foot and went into right field for a quick 2-0 lead.
After scoring 18 runs the night before, the Mohawks offence woke up in the fourth with an 8-run inning. Pete Daniel got the party started with a single that went off the third base bag and into left field. Zach Eldred followed with a double off the wall in left. Austin Fawley singled to left driving in Daniel and Aiden Stewart hit the next pitch to right, scoring Eldred to tie the game and chasing Albany starter Matt Cruz from the game. Jake Sparks put down a bunt and beat it out to load the bases. Austin Fawley gave the Mohawks the lead as he scored on a passed ball. Tyler Figueroa hit a sac-fly to center scoring Aiden Stewart. Jake Sparks scored on a passed ball as Drake Digiorno walked. Jimmy Dionne slapped a single the other way into left field as Sebastian Harden scored. Pete Daniel then hit a 2-run single to right that scored Digiorno and Dionne to make it 8-2.
The Mohawks kept their foot on the gas pedal in the fifth. Aiden Stewart walked and scored on a Jake Sparks double off the wall in right. Bryce Collis would hit 3 straight batters as Tyler Figueroa got the RBI as he forced in Sparks. After a pitching change, Drake Digiorno hit a sac-fly to left scoring Luke Szepek to make it 11-2 Mohawks.
Albany got one run back in the sixth as Jan Avila doubled to center and scored on a Brooks Carter sac-fly to center to make it 11-3.
Brendan Kline got the win in the second game improving to 2-0 as he went 3 perfect innings in relief with 6 strikeouts as the Mohawks improved to 24-5. Matt Cruz took the loss as he fell to 0-1 on the season.
