7-Run 5th Propels Mohawks Past Stallions

By Jon Sargalis

Box Score

A 7-run fifth inning propelled the Mohawks to victory Sunday night as they defeated the Saugerties Stallions 8-1 at Cantine Field.

Brenden Kline started for the Mohawks and it took a few batters to find his command as the first pitch of the game hit Mario Trivella and Brandon Fish walked on 5 pitches. After a Peyton Bonds flyout, Justin Ford put the Stallions on the board with an RBI single to left scoring Trivella.

That would be the only run the Mohawks pitching staff would allow as Brenden Kline, Jesse Kuzmich, James Redick and Mason Veronezi combined to allow just 3 hits to Saugerties. A Brandon Fish single to lead off the fifth would be the last hit the Stallions would record in the game.

Trailing 1-0 in the fifth, Tyler Figueroa led off the inning with a single. That was followed by a walk to Aiden Stewart and then Sebastian Harden tied the game with an RBI double down the left field line scoring Figueroa. That hit sparked the Mohawks offense as it began a streak of 6-straight hits. Javar Williams followed at the top of the order and drove in the go-ahead with a 2-run single to right as Stewart and Harden scored to make it 3-1. After infield singles by Jackson Natili and Evan Haeger to load the bases, Javar Williams would score on a passed ball making it 4-1. Cade Ladehoff followed with a 2-run single to center scoring Natili and Haeger making it 6-1. Liam Willson pinch-hit as the lineup batted around and he singled up the middle to drive in Ladehoff and put the Mohawks up 7-1.

In the sixth, Jackson Natili reached on a walk and scored on a Cade Ladehoff single as Ladehoff got his batting average back up to .400 as he recorded 2 hits and drove in 3 runs.

With the 8-1 win, Amsterdam improved to 31-6 on the season. Jesse Kuzmich got his first win of the season moving to 1-0 and Mason Veronezi got his first save of the season pitching the final 3 innings. Saugerties fell to 26-10-2 as Matt Drillings took the loss, falling to 1-2.
