The Mohawks closed out the regular season on Saturday night with a 5-4 win over the Albany Baseball Club, playing as the road team at Shuttleworth Park. With the number 1 seed locked up, the coaching staff of Zach Breen, Eric Downey and Jay Kehoe wanted to take the reins for a game and gave Head Coach Keith Griffin the night off.
The Mohawks jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Sebastian Harden scored on a Jimmy Dionne sac-fly. That lead was increased in the second inning as Liam Willson hit a 2-run home run and starting pitcher Zach Eldred helped his own cause as he drove in Steven Spalitta with a sac-fly to make it 4-0.
In the bottom of the third, Albany got on the board as Joey Slattery drove in Kyle Brown with a single to make it 4-1.
The teams traded runs in the fifth as Jimmy Dionne drove in Zach Eldred with a single for the Mohawks and Kyle Brown drove in David Bernard with a single for Albany to make it 5-2.
Albany made it interesting as they scored 2 runs in the sixth with Brooks Carter scoring on a David Bernard sac-fly and Jan Avila scoring on a wild pitch to make it 5-4.
In the end, Parker Aikens closed the door, recording the 5-out save, his second of the season, as Manny Santos got the win finishing the season with a 3-0 record. Bryce Collis took the loss, finishing with a 0-4 record this season, as Albany’s year ended with a 10-28-1 record.
The Mohawks finish the regular season with a 35-7 record, the #1 seed and a first-round bye. The quest for a 3rd straight PGCBL title begins on Tuesday as Amsterdam will host the lowest remaining seed in the East bracket.
