Is this Heaven? No, Two Mohawks Get Assigned to Iowa

By Jon Sargalis

It's not a Kevin Costner movie, but 2 former Mohawks made the move to Iowa this past week as the Chicago Cubs assigned Trey Wingenter and Matt Shaw to their Triple-A affiliate, the Iowa Cubs.

The first move came on Friday, August 2nd when the Cubs claimed 2013 Mohawks pitcher Trey Wingenter (Auburn) off waivers from the Boston Red Sox and assigned him to Iowa. Wingenter made his debut for Iowa on Sunday pitching 1 inning, allowing an unearned run on 1 hit with 1 strikeout.

Trey started the season with the Toledo Mud Hens, the Detroit Tigers Triple-A team. The Red Sox traded for him on July 6th, and he bounced back and forth between Boston and Worcester. Wingenter had a phenomenal 1.50 ERA in 4 games with Worcester, but after 2 bad Major League outings, he was designated for assignment and claimed by the Cubs. Across 3 Triple-A teams this season, Wingenter is 4-4 with 2 saves, a 2.95 ERA and 60 strikeouts in 39.2 innings.

Separately, on Tuesday, August 6 the Cubs promoted 2023 First Round pick and 2021 Mohawk Matt Shaw (Maryland) from Double-A and the Tennessee Smokies to Triple-A and the Iowa Cubs. Shaw is a rising star in the Cubs system and even suited up in the MLB Futures Game during the All-Star festivities at Globe Life Field in Arlington, Texas.

Last season Shaw was promoted all the way up to Double-A after being drafted in July and helped the Smokies win the Southern League Championship for the first time since 1947, while being managed by former Mohawk Kevin Graber. Shaw started the season back with the Smokies and played in 86 games with a .279/.373/.468 slash line, hitting 14 home runs, 11 doubles, 3 triples, 50 RBI, 60 runs scored and 25 stolen bases.

The month of July is where Shaw really broke out, hitting .373 with a .414 on-base and a .647 slugging percentage. He hit 4 home runs and drove in 13 runs over 14 games.

Shaw made his Triple-A debut on Tuesday batting 4th and playing third base as the Iowa Cubs were on the road playing the Omaha Storm Chasers. Shaw went 1-for-4 in his debut as the Iowa Cubs picked up a 4-2 win.
