Utah’s Jake Long provided the walk-off dramatics in the ninth inning as the Mohawks defeated the Boonville Lumberjacks 3-2 Monday night at Shuttleworth Park.
The early game belonged to Chris Hoalcraft. The second and fourth innings were nearly carbon copies. The second inning had Hoalcraft reach base on a walk, steal second and score on a Jake Long sac-fly. In the fourth, Hoalcraft slapped a single to right, stole second and scored on a Bray Touchstone single to give the Mohawks a 2-0 lead.
Joey Trombley, Jake Lapham, Nick Simon, James Redick and Derek Duval all pitched phenomenal in their outing for Amsterdam. The Mohawks pitching staff combined for 4 hits, 3 walks and 10 strikeouts. The only blemish came in the sixth inning when Angel Santiago hit a 2-run home run off Nick Simon. That would tie the game at 2 and set up for the ninth inning dramatics.
The ninth began with a walk to Brandon McCraine and Cade Ladehoff reaching on a fielder’s choice. Chris Hoalcraft perfectly executed a hit and run with a single that went past where the second basemen was standing before going to cover the base. With runners on the corners, Bray Touchstone hit a shallow fly ball to right that was not deep enough for Keith Griffin to send the runner. That brought Jake Long up to the plate. He hit the 0-1 pitch to deep left and with the left fielder hugging the wall he missed ball all together which allowed Cade Ladehoff to trot home and give the Mohawks the 3-2 win.
The Mohawks improved to 3-0 with the win, while the Lumberjacks suffered their first loss in their first game of the season. Dereck Duval (1-0) picked up the win as he recorded 2 strikeouts in the ninth, while Riley Hasenstab (0-1) was saddled with the loss for the Lumberjacks.
