Young Hits Grand Slam In Debut, Mohawks Defeat Stallions 15-9

The Mohawks and Stallions played some wild games last season, and in their first meeting this season, they may have raised the bar again. The teams combined to score 11 runs in the first inning and 6 runs in the second as the Mohawks pulled off the 15-9 win Sunday at Cantine Field in Saugerties.

Amsterdam came storming out of the gates on Sunday. Brandon McCraine tripled in the first inning and scored on a Jake Long sac-fly. Then an error and 2 walks allowed newcomer, Jon Young, Jr. from Alabama to step up to the plate with the opportunity to do something special in his Mohawks debut, and he did just that. The very first pitch he saw in a Mohawks uniform sailed over the right field fence for a grand slam.

Trailing 5-0 before having a chance to swing the bat might seem like a tall order, but the Stallions were up for the task. The bottom of the first started with 7 straight Stallions reaching base. Travis Hobbensiefken doubled to get the Stallions on the board, then Danny Barbero and Casey Cumiskey followed with singles to make it 5-3. The streak of seven straight batters reaching base stopped with Logan Sanchez, but it proved to be a productive out as the sac-fly made it 5-4. After a pitching change, leadoff batter Lewis Rodriguez stepped in again and delivered his second hit of the inning, a 2-run go-ahead single as the Stallions took a 6-5 lead.

Now trailing, the Mohawks went back to work in the second inning. Brad Curtis led off the inning reaching on an error and tied the game as he scored on a Brandon McCraine single. Chris Hoalcraft put Amsterdam back in front with a 2-run double to left and Bray Touchstone drove in a run on a groundout to put the Mohawks in front by an 8-6 score.

The bottom of the second saw the Stallions rally again as an error at first allowed 2 runs to score as the score became tied at 8. Then Logan Sanchez hit another sac-fly as Justin Ford scored to put Saugerties in front, 9-8.

Again, Amsterdam answered the call. Walks to Luke Filippi and Sebastian Harden set the stage for Jake Long to hit a 2-run double as the lead flipped again with the Mohawks up 10-9.

James Redick came out of the bullpen in the third inning for Amsterdam and put a stop to the shenanigans as he fired a 1-2-3 inning.

The Mohawks bats, however, did not relent. In the fourth inning, Brad Curtis hit an RBI single and Sebastian Harden hit a bases clearing 3-run triple as the Mohawks took a 14-9 lead and Redick followed with another 1-2-3 inning on the mound.

The Mohawks scored one more run in the sixth inning as Wes Walker doubled and scored on a Luke Filippi single to put a cap on the offence for the day as the Mohawks took a 15-9 lead.

At the end, all 10 men who appeared in the Mohawks box score accumulated at least one hit. Jon Young, Jr.’s grand slam netted him 4 RBIs to lead the way. Sebastian Harden and Jake Long each tallied had 3 RBI.

James Redick got the win as the Mohawks improved to 7-0. Steven Svenson took the loss as the Stallions fell to 3-3.
