The Mohawks perfect start to the season looked to be over, but a ninth-inning rally capped off with a walk-off walk propelled Amsterdam to a 12-11 victory over the Glens Falls Dragons on Tuesday night at Rao Family Stadium as the Mohawks improved to 8-0.
It shaped up early to be another Mohawks lopsided victory. Trailing 1-0, Bray Touchstone got the Mohawks bats going as he led off the second inning with a double. Back-to-back singles by Jayden Harriel and Jon Young, Jr. evened the game up at one. Wes Walker walked to load the bases and Sebastian Harden drew another walk to force in Harriel putting the Mohawks up one. Luke Filippi walked to force home Young and then Jake Long delivered the big blow with a 3-run single to left that gave Amsterdam a 6-1 lead after the second innings.
The Dragons woke up in the fourth inning and put 5 runs on the board to tie the game at 6. Trent Jenks hit an RBI double, Tate Van Alstyne had a groundout RBI, Jaxon Mueller followed with an RBI double. Mueller then tried to steal third, but the throw from the catcher sailed into left allowing the Dragons to pull within a run, but it wouldn’t matter as Andrew Gabriel followed with the game tying home run.
Each team scored on a wild pitch in the fifth inning to make it 7-7.
Glens Falls pulled ahead in the sixth as Tate Van Alstyne led off with a single, Jaxon Mueller followed with a double and they both scored on a Andrew Gabriel double. Gabriel would later score on an error as the Dragons, who were down 6-1 at one point, pulled ahead with a 10-7 lead.
The Mohawks wouldn’t go down without a fight as Bray Touchstone scored on an error and Sebastian Harden drove in Jayden Harriel with a single to cut the score to 10-9 after seven.
Logan Mote gave the Dragons an insurance run in the eighth on a single to left that scored Andrew Gabriel to make it 11-9.
Then came the high dramatics of the ninth inning. Bray Touchstone was hit by a pitch to lead off the ninth. Jayden Harriel doubled, so the decision was made to intentionally walk Jon Young, Jr. to set up the force at any base. That plan backfired immediately as Wes Walker was hit by a pitch to force in a run making it 11-10. Brad Curtis followed with the game-tying single to right that scored Harriel. After a strikeout, Luke Filippi stepped in; the Mohawks leadoff hitter had already walked 3 times in the game and after fouling the first pitch off he took the next four pitches for balls, drawing his fourth walk of the game and driving in Jon Young, Jr. with the walk-off run to seal the 12-11 Mohawks victory.
The Dragons had the Mohawks on the ropes looking for their first win over Amsterdam since 2022. However, the Mohawks winning streak goes to 20-straight games over the Dragons.
The Mohawks improved to 8-0 with the win as Cai Cheng En improved to 2-0. Dillion Harding took the loss, falling to 1-1, as the Dragons fell to 2-5.
The Dragons out hit the Mohawks 14-10, but the 4 errors and 11 walks were their undoing. Each team had two players record 3 hits; for the Dragons it was Trent Jenks and Andrew Gabriel, while for the Mohawks it was Jake Long and Jayden Harriel.
The Mohawks are right back in action tomorrow night in Amsterdam as they host the Oneonta Outlaws at 6:35 PM.
