In 2023, the Mohawks got off to a 9-0 start and traveled to Mohawk Valley and were handed an 8-2 loss, ending the best start in team history. This year the Mohawks matched the 2023 team as they started the season 9-0 again and were traveling to Mohawk Valley again. The result? The same. The Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs prevented the Amsterdam Mohawks from getting off to a 10-0 start for the second time in the past 3 seasons. This time it was an 8-3 loss they doled out.
The game got off to a promising start for the Mohawks. Four of the first five batters reached base and Amsterdam took the lead on a Chris Hoalcraft walk that scored Luke Filippi giving the Mohawks a 1-0 lead.
The DiamondDawgs answered back in the bottom of the second as Kaden Hart hit a leadoff double and later scored on a John Ramsey single, tying the game at one.
Amsterdam regained the lead in the top of the fourth as three consecutive errors led to Bray Touchstone scoring and giving the Mohawks a 2-1 lead.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Mohawks went to the bullpen and Joey Gecewicz received a rude greeting from the Dawgs as the first out that was recorded was a sacrifice bunt to move 2 runners into scoring position. They both scored 2 pitches later as Matt Sutera hit a 2-run go-ahead double. Following an Edwin Sanchez single, Sutera scored on a Tyler Jones groundout and Sanchez scored on a Joey Calabretti single which gave the DiamondDawgs a 5-2 lead after four.
Nick Semon took over on the mound in the fifth and alternated hit batters with flyouts. Then with 2 on and 2 out, he gave up an RBI single to Matt Sutera and an RBI double to Edwin Sanchez as Mohawk Valley took a 7-2 lead.
Amsterdam looked to regain some momentum in the seventh with the bases loaded. Danny Perez scored on a passed ball, but the rally ended there as Jake Beck struck out Luke Costello as the Dawgs held a 7-3 lead.
In the eighth, Joey Calabretti put the icing on a 3-hit day for himself as he delivered an RBI double scoring Edwin Sanchez and made the score 8-3 in favor of the DIamondDawgs.
The DiamondDawgs got back to .500 with the win as their record is now even at 4-4, Drew Harris (1-0) was credited with the win. The Mohawks fell to 9-1 as Joey Gecewicz (0-1) was saddled with the loss.
The Mohawks will look to get back on track tomorrow night back in Amsterdam as they host the Glens Falls Dragons at 6:35.
