The Mohawks put their recent 2-game slide to bed as they bounced back with a 4-2 win over the Utica Blue Sox Tuesday at Rao Family Stadium.
Luke Filippi got the Mohawks going right out of the gate as the leadoff hitter homered to right on the third pitch of the game, staking the Mohawks to a 1-0 lead.
In the third, Mohawks head coach Keith Griffin decided to steal a run. With Peyton Jemison on third, he had Sebastian Harden lay down a bunt to get the run in as Amsterdam took a 2-0 lead.
In the sixth, Jake Long led off the inning with single and scored as Bray Touchstone deposited the 0-2 pitch over the left field fence for a 2-run home run as the Mohawks took a 4-0 lead.
Utica’s bats didn’t have a resolution for Mohawks pitching after 6 innings. Zach Hernandez threw 4 shutout innings allowing 1 hit and 1 walk and Tommy Skelding allowed just 1 hit the following 2 innings.
In the seventh, Sam Falace took the mound and struggled with command as he walked the bases loaded before being pulled in favor of Nick Semon. Utica got on the board as Lewis Haung scored on a wild pitch and then the Mohawks traded a run for 2 outs as Parker Barraza grounded into a 6-4-3 double play which allowed Matt Coella to score.
That would end the dramatics for the game as Joey Gecewicz pitched a scoreless eighth and Manny Santos redeemed himself from Saturday’s walk-off in Utica as he closed out the game for his first save of the season.
Zach Hernandez collected his first win of the season as the Mohawks moved to 11-3. Ted Hohn was dealt the loss (0-1) as the Blue Sox fell to 4-6.
These teams will meet again tomorrow in a doubleheader as the venue shifts to Murnane Field in Utica. The first game is set to begin at 5:00.
