The Mohawks suffered their first loss of July, snapping their 5-game winning streak as the Saugerties Stallions handed them a 3-1 defeat.
Matthew Drillings, Reece Moroney, Gregory Bruno and Mason Weaver combined to allow 3 hits and 1 unearned run to shut the Mohawks offense down.
The Mohawks defense was on early display as Jack Kirchner continued to work out of danger. That luck ran out in the fourth inning as Justin Ford singled and scored on a Reece Moroney double to right for the game’s first run. That was followed by a Dylan Passo single that scored Moroney to make it 2-0.
Amsterdam’s lone run came in the sixth. Alex Junghans reached on a single, advanced to second on a wild pitch and third on a passed ball. Peyton Jemison had drawn a walk and was thrown out trying to steal second, but Junghans came home with the Mohawks first run to make it 2-1.
In the eighth, the Stallions loaded the bases on walks and George Baker drove in Reece Moroney with a sac-fly to make it 3-1.
Reece Moroney was the clear player of the game. He was involved in every Stallions run as he scored twice and drove in the other run with the game’s only extra base hit for either team. On the mound, he was the winning pitcher as he went 3.1 innings allowing 2 hits and 1 unearned run with 2 walks and 1 strikeout. Mason Weaver earned the save as he pitched 2 perfect innings to close the game. Meanwhile, Jack Kirchner (1-1) took the loss for the Mohawks.
The Mohawks and Stallions are back in action tomorrow in Amsterdam for a doubleheader at Rao Family Stadium starting at 4:15 PM.
