A late error opened the door to a Mohawks comeback as Amsterdam defeated the Boonville Lumberjacks 5-3 on Tuesday night at Rao Family Stadium.
The Lumberjacks struck early as Carter McKay tripled for his first of 3 hits on the day to drive in Chase Triplett for a 1-0 first inning lead.
The Mohawks would strike back in the third as Chris Hoalcraft homered to pull the game even at 1.
Boonville would retake the lead in the fourth as Devan Meran grounded out to score Jeremiah McLemore and Miguel Gonzalez singled to drive in Carter McKay for a 3-1 lead.
Amsterdam would answer back with another solo home run in the sixth inning, this time off the bat of Jake Sparks to make it 3-2.
The with 6 outs the go, the Lumberjacks were in prime position to put an end to their 8-game losing streak. However, when teams are in a deep slide, Murphy’s Law seems to have it out for you. That moment came in the eighth inning when everything went wrong. Bray Touchstone began the inning watching the first four pitches miss the zone. John McKillop followed and did the same, except the eighth straight miss hit him as he hollered into the Mohawks dugout to get the team fired up. Luke Costello then singled to load the bases. A wild pitch with Jake Sparks batting tied the game as Bray Touchstone scored and moved the go-ahead runs into scoring position. Sparks would hit into a fielder’s choice as the grounder to first got home in time to tag out John McKillop. Will Cowan followed with a groundout that moved the runners up. With 2 outs, Brett Rowell hit a grounder to third the should’ve ended the inning, instead, the throw sailed away and allowed Costello and Sparks to score and give the Mohawks a 5-3 lead.
Shellshocked, Tristan Hunter returned for the ninth inning and promptly put an end to the game as the Lumberjacks went down in order.
The Mohawks improved to 28-8-2 with the win, while the Lumberjacks suffered their ninth loss in a row, dropping to 17-19-1 as Peter Nenadich III took the loss falling to 1-3.
Tristan Hunter improved to 2-1 as he only allowed a walk pitching 3 hitless innings with 7 strikeouts. The Mohawks recorded 17 strikeouts total as starter Jack Kirchner had 6 over the first 4 innings and Nolan Feidt had 4 in 2 of the middle frames.
In addition to their home runs, Chris Hoalcraft and Jake Sparks each had 3 hits in the game.
Amsterdam will be on the road tomorrow as they face the Saugerties Stallions at Cantine Field starting at 7:05 PM.
