For the thirteenth straight time, fifteenth under coach Keith Griffin and twentieth time overall, the Division Title belongs to the Mohawks. With the Magic Number at 2, the Mohawks traveled to Cantine Field Wednesday night to face the second place Saugerties Stallions and came away with an 8-4 win and the Division Title.
Amsterdam’s offense showed up ready to attack as they scored runs in each of the first five innings. The first inning began with back-to-back singles by Luke Filippi and Chris Hoalcraft. Bray Touchstone was hit by a pitch to load the bases, and John McKilliop came back from a 1-2 count to draw a walk and force home Filippi with the game’s first run.
In the second, Will Cowan drove in Brandon McCraine with a single. Later in the inning, Chris Hoalcraft and Bray Touchstone hit back-to-back RBI doubles and suddenly the Mohawks had a 4-0 lead.
The Stallions responded in the bottom of the second as Andrew Ray hit an RBI single to drive Jamie Zee in to make it 4-1.
The Mohawks would get that run back in the third as Brandon McCraine grounded into a double play that was able to bring home Luke Costello to make the score 5-1.
In the fourth, Bray Touchstone drew a walk and with Will Cowan taking a hefty lead at third, the catcher tried to pick him off. Cowan broke for home and was able to skirt around the catcher after he received the return throw and the steal of home increased the Mohawks lead to 6-1.
Dylan Passo got another Stallions run home in the bottom of the fourth as he hit a sac-fly to right that brought in Michael Lebenson to make it 6-2.
In the fifth, Brandon McCraine took advantage of a pair of leadoff walks and singled to drive in Luke Costello. Another pair of walks later in the inning saw Chris Hoalcraft get credited with an RBI as the four-pitch walk forced home Brett Rowell to make it 8-2.
That would be all for the Mohawks on offence as they had more than enough runs. Saugerties scored one in the bottom of the seventh as Casey Cumiskey doubled for his fourth hit of the game and scored on a Jamie Zee single and one more in the eighth as Adonis Medina doubled and scored on a Dylan Passo sac-fly to make it 8-4.
Parker Aikens was the starting and winning pitcher for the Mohawks as he improved to 3-0 for the 29-8-2 Mohawks. Matthew Murtaugh fell to 2-2 for the 23-13-1 Stallions.
The Mohawks will stay on the road tomorrow as they travel to Smith Sports Complex to take on the Boonville Lumberjacks at 6:45 PM.
