Perhaps it was a hangover from clinching the division yesterday? A trap game? Maybe the Lumberjacks were fed up with their 10-game losing streak and remembered the crushing defeat they suffered to the Mohawks on Tuesday. Whatever you want to chalk it up to, the Mohawks were soundly defeated Thursday night at Smith Sports Complex by a score of 12-5 at the hands of the Boonville Lumberjacks.
The game got off to a promising start for the Mohawks; Luke Costello hit an RBI single to drive in Brett Rowell for a 1-0 lead.
Then the wheels quickly came off for the Mohawks in the bottom of the first. Back-to-back walks to start the inning set up Cater McKay to tie the game with a single and an error in right helped everyone advance a base. A passed ball allowed the Lumberjacks to take a 2-1 lead and an Erwin Cabassa RBI single made it 3-1.
In the fourth, Luke Costello connected on a solo home run to right and cut the Lumberjacks’ lead to 3-2.
In the bottom of the fourth, Jorge Olivera doubled and later scored on a Connor Tepatti ground out. Then with Jesse Kuzmich taking over to stop the bleeding, he checked the runner at first with 2 outs and ended up throwing the ball into right field which allowed a pair of runs to score and gave Boonville a 6-2 lead.
Amsterdam got one back in the top of the fifth as Bray Touchstone singled home Peyton Jemison to make it 6-3. Then in the sixth, Sebastian Harden doubled and scored on a Will Cowan single to cut the lead to 6-4.
In the bottom of the sixth, Jorge Olivera scored on a wild pitch, Connor Tepatti scored on a passed ball and Akhil Nimmala singled to drive in Sebastian Burgos who doubled earlier in the inning as the Lumberjacks pulled farther ahead with a 9-4 lead.
Jeremiah McLemore put the icing on the cake for the Lumberjacks in the seventh inning. Back-to-back singles began the inning and it set up McLemore to deliver the final decisive blow as he crushed a 3-run homer to right to put Boonville up 12-4.
The Mohawks would score once more in the eighth inning as Bray Touchstone scored on a Sebastian Harden sac-fly, but the game was well out of reach at that point as the Lumberjacks prevailed 12-5.
Luke Costello was a bright spot for the Mohawks as he went 3-for-4 with a home run and 2 RBI. On the other side, Chase Triplett and Jorge Olivera each went 3-for-4 with a stolen base.
Colton Sampson was the winning pitcher improving to 1-1 as he struck out 8 over 5 innings as the Lumberjacks snapped their 10-game losing streak to improve to 18-20-1. Zach Hernandez took the loss, falling to 1-1 as the Mohawks dropped to 29-9-2. Each team recorded 15 strikeouts in the game.
Amsterdam will return home tomorrow to host the Glens Falls Dragons beginning at 6:35 PM for Fireworks Night at Rao Family Stadium.
