It was an ugly night in the field for the Amsterdam Mohawks as they committed 6 errors and were soundly defeated by the Saugerties Stallions by a score of 14-6 on Sunday night at Cantine Field.
The first inning set the tone as Lewis Rodriguez reached on an infield single and took second on an error. After a sac-bunt moved him to third, a passed ball then allowed Rodriguez to trot home and give the Stallions a 1-0 lead.
The second inning began with back-to-back singles by the Stallions to put runners on the corners. Casey Cumiskey reached on a fielder’s choice to bring Logan Sanchez home. Then a hit batter loaded the bases and a walk to John Freitag forced home Adonis Medina. Following a strikeout, Lewis Rodriguez grounded into a fielder’s choice as the Mohawks could not turn the inning ending double play and it brought home Cumiskey to make it 4-0. Then Jamie Zee hit a grounder to third that was misplayed and 2 more runs scored on the error to put the exclamation point on a 5-run inning to make it 6-0.
Amsterdam’s bats responded in the third inning. Sebastian Harden led off with a double and scored on a Will Cowan sac-fly. After a hit batter and an error, Luke Filippi hit an RBI double that scored Peyton Jemison. Brett Rowell followed with a single to bring home DJ Wallace and Jake Sparks hit a sac-fly that brought home Luke Filippi, and the Mohawks appeared to be back in the game as the score now stood at 6-4.
The comeback was derailed by the fourth inning. George Baker doubled to lead off the inning. An error and a hit batter loaded the bases for Lewis Rodriguez to hit an RBI single to bring home Baker. After 2 quick outs, the Mohawks looked to have bounced back, but then Saugerties responded with 3-straight run scoring singles. Pat Costin drove in a pair; Logan Sanchez drove in one and Adonis Medina drove in the other as the Stallions put up another 5-run inning to lead by a score of 11-4.
Amsterdam scored 2 in the top of the fifth courtesy of a Luke Costello 2-run single that scored Jon Young, Jr. and Luke Filippi and cut the Stallions lead to 11-6.
The Stallions would tac on a few more runs in the later innings. Adonis Medina recorded hit third hit of the game to drive in Michael Lebenson. Then in the seventh, Lewis Rodriguez recorded his third hit to drive in Andrew Ray and would later score on a passed ball to make it 14-6.
Pat Costin was the other Stallions player to have a three-hit night. On the Mohawks side, Luke Filippi went a perfect 4-for-4 with a double.
Sean Dertinger (2-0) was the winning pitcher for the Stallions as they improved to 26-13-1. Cai Cheng En (3-1) suffered his first loss of the season as the Mohawks fell to 30-10-2.
The Mohawks play their final road game of the season tomorrow night at Damaschke Field at they face the Oneonta Outlaws at 7:00 PM.
