The Blue Sox struck early, but the Mohawks kept the pressure on all game as Amsterdam eventually prevailed 16-12 Monday night at Murnane Field in Utica.
The Blue Sox struck first in the first as Xavier Smith hit a bases clearing double that landed just fair down the left field line and Smith came in on an error as Utica took a 4-0 lead after one.
The Mohawks got on the board in the second as Chris McLaughlin hit an RBI single to left that scored Aiden Dill and Jordan Perry followed with a triple that landed just beyond the diving left fielder which drove in McLaughlin to cut the Blue Sox lead to 4-2.
Amsterdam tied the game in the third on a wild pitch and an Aiden Dill hits a sacrifice-fly that scored Tyler Correa to even the game at 4.
In the fourth the Mohawks had 3 infield singles that set the table for Markus Brehm as he hit a bases clearing triple and then scored on a James Haughton single to give the Mohawks an 8-4 lead.
That lead was short lived. An error on a steal of third led to a Utica run, an RBI single by Christian Cerone scored another. An apparent inning ending ground ball was hit, but the error extended the inning and scored another run. Connor Jones hit an RBI single to tie the game and then Xavier Smith had another 3-run hit as it was a home run to cap off a 7-run inning and gave the Blue Sox a 11-8 lead at the end of the fourth.
In the fifth, Aiden Dill homered to right to cut the lead to 11-9. However, the Blue Sox got the run back on an RBI single by Michael Flashner. It was nearly a 2-run single, but the trail runner was thrown out at the plate as the Blue Sox took a 12-9 lead.
The sixth saw Andrew Ezell hit a single to score James Haughton as the Mohawks scored their tenth run of the game and trailed 12-10.
In the seventh, Robert Melo hits a sac-fly to score Aiden Dill to pull within a run. Then Markus Brehm struck again with a 2-run double for his fifth RBI of the game as the Mohawks took a 13-12 lead. Brehm would later be driven in by James Haughton as the Mohawks went up 14-12.
In the eighth Robert Melo but the icing on the cake with a 2-run single as the Mohawks took a 16-12 lead.
Joey Gecewicz locked in for the final 3 innings to earn the save and Andy Cai received the win as the Mohawks improved to 5-3.
The Mohawks are back in action Tuesday night at Rao Family Stadium to host the Glens Falls Dragons at 6:35.
