The Amsterdam Mohawks 2012 PGCBL season opener on the road at the Cooperstown Hawkeyes was suspended due to darkness at 2-2 after 11 innings. Doubleday Field in Cooperstown does not have lights. At
7:57pm, both head coaches agreed that the conditions were getting too dark to continue. The game was nearly three hours old at that point.
The game will be resumed in the 12th inning at a future date yet to be officially announced. The Amsterdam Mohawks return to Cooperstown for a game on Sunday but it was not yet known if the suspended game would
be completed on that day as well. None of the statistics from the game will count for the individual players until the game is finished in the future.
Rocky McCord (Auburn) of Amsterdam and Dennis Buckley (Charleston Southern) of Cooperstown spun scoreless baseball for the first five innings of the debut game. Buckley was exceptional going six strong
innings of one hit ball with four strikeouts while McCord battled his way out of a couple jams in five innings of work that included seven strikeouts.
Cooperstown scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning off reliever Matt Gage (Siena). Catcher Chris Robinson (Louisberg Coll.) and second baseman Josh Ingram (Central Connecticut St.) had rbi hits
among the four consecutive singles the Hawkeyes produced, all with two outs.
The Mohawks plated single runs in the seventh and eighth innings to equalize. A ground out by Brian Doran (Maine) brought home Zac Colby (Faulkner Univ, Ala.) from third. And DJ Hoagboon (Mayfield) doubled
to lead off the eighth and then scored on a Chase Green double to right.
Raleigh Rushing (Cypress College) was on in relief as the fourth Cooperstown pitcher at the point of suspension. Connor Kaden (Wake Forest) was the third hurler used for Keith Griffin's team allowing no
hits in the 10th and 11th frames.
An official box-score of the game was not available due to the game not being completed. Cooperstown so far in the game had two runs on nine hits and no errors. Amsterdam had two runs on six hits and no errors.
Amsterdam plays their home opener, presented by St. Mary's Hospital, Thursday night at 7:00 against the Albany Dutchmen. Cooperstown is back at home Thursday at 5:00 to host the Elmira Pioneers.
