The Amsterdam Mohawks visited the Cooperstown Hawkeyes Sunday evening to resume a Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League suspended contest from last Wednesday and also play their originally scheduled game. Cooperstown dramatically took the opener in 14 innings 4-3 and then Amsterdam bounced back to win the finale 9-3.
Game one picked up in the 12th inning of a 2-2 tie. It was originally called due to darkness after 11 innings in the season-opener for both teams last Wednesday, June 6. Doubleday Field has no lights.
Cooperstown trailed 3-2 in the bottom of the 14th inning and Amsterdam was one out away from victory. But Coleman Barron (Davidson) for the Hawkeyes launched a Connor Kaden (Wake Forest) offering over the left-field wall for the game-winning two-run homer turning the tables on the Mohawks.
The game-winning home-run was Cooperstown's first hit since the eighth inning and the only hit allowed by Kaden in five splendid innings of relief work dating back to the first day.
Chase Williamson's (Auburn) double in the top of the 14th and eventually scored on a Chase Green (SIU Edwardsville) single in the top of the frame.
Chris Robinson (Louisburg) and Josh Ingham (Central Connecticut St) had RBI singles in the fifth inning for Cooperstown back in the original action on Wednesday. Chase Green had two RBI for the Mohawks.
Both teams had great chances to win the contest before the 14th inning drama. Amsterdam had the bases loaded with nobody out when Sunday play commenced in the 12th. But Raleigh Rushing (Cypress) struck out Chase Green and then induced a double-play ball from Josh Nethaway (U.Albany) to escape the jam.
In the second game the Mohawks would score a season high nine runs in a game in which they topped the eight-run mark for the third straight game (the first game officially took place on Wednesday). Ed Charlton (NJ Tech) and Chase Green blasted solo homers for the first multi-homer game of the season for Amsterdam.
Tom Bernal (Kentucky) went 2-for-5 with four RBI.
Amsterdam led just 1-0 after five innings but would score three in the sixth and then four in the seventh to open a 9-0 lead. Cooperstown tallied runs in the eighth and ninth to break-up the shutout bid.
Mohawks starter Chandler Shephard (Kentucky) was strong in his debut with seven strikeouts in five innings for the win.
Anthony Simon (Mercy) and Tyler Mautner (Buffalo) both had a pair of hits for the Hawkeyes.
Amsterdam is now 3-2 while Cooperstown is 1-2.
Amsterdam has the day off on Monday before returning to action Tuesday night at Shuttleworth Park against the Oneonta Outlaws.
Cooperstown hits the road Monday night to play at the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs in the first of five straight road games for the Hawkeyes.
