Mohawks win 15-inning marathon

By Bob Rotruck

Box Score

Lefty Matt Gage (Siena) put forth a tremendous relief effort in extra innings and the Amsterdam Mohawks broke their own recently set record for longest game in Perfect Game Collegiate Baseball League history as they pulled off a 5-4 win at the Oneonta Outlaws in 15 innings.

The old league record for the longest game was 14 innings just last Sunday when Amsterdam lost at Cooperstown 4-3 in the completion of a suspended game. The first 11 innings of that game took place on opening day on Wednesday, June 6 before it was suspended due to darkness.

In their very next time out, the Mohawks broke their own record and this time came up victorious. Gage came on in the 10th inning and slammed the door on the Outlaws while just waiting for his Amsterdam team. Improving to 2-0, Gage fired six innings of shutout ball through the dramatic extra frames allowing just one hit while striking out seven.

Ed Charlton (NJIT) had pushed the game into extras with a 2-run triple in the top of the ninth that tied the score at 4-4.

The Mohawks took the lead in the 15th when Zak Colby (Faulkner, AL) legged out an infield grounder that was juggled by Oneonta second baseman Sutton Whiting (Louisville) thus allowing Giuseppe Papaccio (Seton Hall) to score the winning run. Papaccio began the 15th with a walk, stole second, and then advanced on a ground-out prior to Colby barely beating the two-out muffed ground ball.

Gage put the side away in order in the 15th, striking out Zach Lucas (Louisville) to end the game for his seventh punchout of the night.

Amsterdam improved to 4-2 with the victory while Oneonta fell to 3-2.

The Mohawks are off on Thursday and then return home to Shuttleworth Park on Friday and Saturday nights facing the Elmira Pioneers and the U.S. Military All-Stars.
