Albany Steals Win From Amsterdam

AMSTERDAM, NY – It took almost four hours and 12 innings for the Albany Dutchmen (3-0) to defeat the Amsterdam Mohawks (0-3) by a score of 3-2. Two runs in the top of the 12th inning proved to be the difference with the Mohawks attempting another two-run comeback in the bottom of the inning.

Drew Tolson (Baylor) pitched eight nearly flawless innings for the Dutchmen with a small hiccup coming in the sixth inning. Tolson scattered three hits over the eight innings, striking out four and walking none in the process. Josh Lee (Lipscomb) had a 3-5 night for the Dutchmen offense as well.

Luke Nethaway (St. Rose) and Josh Gardiner (Radford) each had a double and scored the lone two runs for the Mohawks as the only offense in the game.

For the first five and a half innings, Tolson and Mohawks’ starter Brandon Whitmore (Savannah State) were locked in a pitchers duel until the Mohawks broke the deadlock in the bottom of the sixth with Nethaway scoring on a Joey Aiola (Marist) groundout after Nethaway doubled to center.

The Dutchmen came back to tie the game at one in the top of the ninth with Adam Lee (Lipscomb) coming in to score after reaching on a double down the left field line.

Albany’s Reid Matthews (Coastal Carolina) singled to left in the 12th driving in Denny Hrbeck (Radford) for the game-winning run. James Locklear (Rider) singled to center scoring Matthews for an insurance run.

Albany will take their perfect record on the road to Watertown to face the Rams at 5 p.m.

Amsterdam dropped it’s third-consecutive 3-2 decision and drop to 0-3 on the season. The Mohawks will look for their first win in Glens Falls against the Golden Eagles at 7 p.m.
