Newark downs Amsterdam 4-3

Newark was able to come back from a 3-2 deficit to beat Amsterdam 4-3 in the Pilots’ home opener. A crowd of 505 people saw the Pilots score two runs in the bottom of the fifth and hold off the Mohawks in the Pilots’ fifth win of the season.

Tanner Giesel hit a two-run double in the fifth to score Darian Hairston and Samm Wiggins, giving Newark the lead for good. In the top half of the inning, Amsterdam scored three runs on a groundout, a Josh Gardiner single and a JaVon Shelby double.

The Pilots scored lone runs in both the second and the third on errors to take an early 2-0 lead. Newark’s offense was led by Tommy Wagner and Louis Silverio, who both tallied two hits. Marcus Carson and Blake Logan both went 2-for-4 for Amsterdam.

Andrew Tidwell tossed an inning and two thirds of scoreless relief to pick up the win for Newark. Andy Ward allowed the two Newark runs in the fifth as he took the loss.
