Blatch and Carson help Mohawks top Rams

WATERTOWN, NY- The Amsterdam Mohawks (3-6) used timely hitting and solid pitching to defeat the host Watertown Rams (3-5) by a score of 6-2. Taylor Blatch (Florida State) picked up the win, his second of the season, while Dalton D’Spain (Texas A&M-Corpus Christi) took the loss for the Rams.
 
Amsterdam took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning on a JaVon Shelby (Kentucky) double. The game remained scoreless until the fifth inning when Amsterdam plated a run, the first of three consecutive innings in which Amsterdam scored.
 
Shelby and Lukas Nethaway (St. Rose) each drove home runs with sacrifice flies in the fifth and seventh innings, respectively. In the sixth, the Mohawks scored on a double play and a Marcus Carson (Kentucky) triple. John Razzino (Franklin Pierce) drove home the final Mohawk run in the seventh.
 
Watertown scored lone runs in the eighth and ninth innings to make it a 6-2 game. Jason Scholl (Eastern Illinois) doubled home Matt Diorio (UCF) in the eighth while Dominic Lopez (Texas AM-Corpus Christi) singled home Brandon Mikulka (Creighton) in the ninth.
 
Mohawk starter Taylor Blatch went five innings without allowing a run while striking out four and only allowing one hit in the win. Ram starter Dalton D’Spain went five and two-thirds innings allowing four runs on six hits while striking out three.
 
Marcus Carson finished 3-for-5 on the game and Josh Gardiner (Radford) and John Razinno each tallied two hits for the Mohawks. Matt Diorio went 1-for-3 with two walks for the Rams.
 
The Rams stay at the Alex T. Duffy Fairgrounds tomorrow night as they host the Utica Brewers. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. Amsterdam travels to Mohawk Valley to play a double-header in Little Falls. First pitch of game one is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
