Amsterdam wins 10th straight over Glens Falls, 7-3

The Mohawks bats were alive and well once again in a 7-3 win over the Golden Eagles of Glens Falls. Amsterdam scored four runs in the first two innings to put the game out of reach and withstood a strong comeback attempt by Glens Falls in the top of the sixth to put a W in the win column for the tenth straight game.
Marcus Carson (Kentucky) had himself a game going 3-3 with a double, RBI, two runs and three stolen bases. The man batting behind him, Josh Gardiner (Radford) also went 3-3 with two runs and an RBI. Gardiner also stole a base as well.
Zack Brown (Kentucky) started on the bump for the Mohawks and faced the minimum batters through the first four innings before running into a bases-loaded speedbump in the fifth. He was able to work out of the inning and earn the win for the Mohawks.
Amsterdam opened up the scoring when Josh Gardiner stole second with Marcus Carson on third. Glens Falls catcher Brandon Purcell (Georgia College) threw down to second on a planned defensive play to gun down Carson attempting to take home. The throw took J.Q. Folena (Cabrillo) off balance and Folena’s throw home was knocked out of Purcell’s glove allowing Carson to score and Gardiner to move to third. Gardiner came in to score on a JaVon Shelby single to right.
The Mohawks added two more runs in the home half of the second inning. Jonathon Pryor (Wake Forest) doubled to right field. After a Blake Logan (Auburn) single, Pryor came in to score on a Kevin Guthrie (Brown) suicide squeeze bunt. Marcus Carson then doubled down the right field line, allowing Logan to score from second, pushing the score to 4-0 Mohawks.
Amsterdam added two runs to their lead in the fifth inning. Carson singled through the right side of the infield, and then proceeded to steal second base. Gardiner singled past Folena at shortstop, but Carson was thrown out attempting to score. Tommy Kain (Lynn University) doubled to right center, plating Gardiner for the fifth run, 5-0 Mohawks. Kain advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored when Lynn University teammate, Alex DeBellis, beat out an infield single, 6-0 Mohawks.
The Golden Eagles made a valiant attempt at a comeback in their half of the sixth. Mark Powell (Bucknell) singled off of Mohawks’ reliever Thomas Hackimer (St. John’s). A Hackimer pitch then plunked Garrett Bernardo (Anderson) and Brennan Price (Felician) walked to load the bases. Nick Bernardo (Maine), in his Golden Eagles debut as a pinch hitter, grounded out to second allowing Powell to plate the first Glens Falls run. J.Q. Folena grounded a single through the left side of the infield, enabling Bernardo and Price to score bringing the score to 6-3.
Amsterdam capped their scoring in the bottom of the sixth. Glens Falls’ reliever Kevin Cowan (William Patterson) plunked Marcus Carson with two outs in the inning. Carson came around from first when the Glens Falls defense was a bit lax on a Josh Gardiner single to right. Mohawks’ coach Keith Griffin sent Carson around third when he noticed the lazy toss back into the infield. Carson slid in underneath the tag for the seventh Mohawks run.
Joe Randall (Fairfield) came on to pitch for Amsterdam in the seventh and threw three effective innings to earn his second save of the season. Randall finished with four strikeouts.
The Mohawks travel to Albany to take on the Dutchmen in the fourth installment of this season’s I-90 rivalry. Amsterdam is 2-1 this season against Albany. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 at Bob Bellizzi Field at the College of St. Rose sports complex.
Glens Falls hosts Mohawk Valley in an East Division matchup. The Golden Eagles and DiamondDawgs are at the top and bottom of the division respectively. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 at East Field in Glens Falls.
