Purritano and Logan help Hawks pummel Pilots

By Brendan Reilly

Box Score

Shuttleworth Park, Amsterdam--- The Amsterdam Mohawks pummeled the Newark Pilots Sunday night by a score of 11-3. The Mohawks’ bats combined for sixteen hits, six of which came in a 4-run first inning. Joe Purritano’s (Dartmouth) 2-run double in the fourth inning was the biggest hit in the game for the Mohawks.

E.J. Ashworth (Fairfield) pitched five innings to earn the win for Amsterdam. He struck out seven, four of which came in the third inning during a span where Ashworth struck out six straight Pilots. Zach Wall (Young Harris) reached first base after a dropped third strike and a bad throw down to first by Blake Logan (Auburn), which helped Ashworth complete the rare feat. Joe Purritano went 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI’s, but was taken out in the fifth inning after the Mohawks took a 9-0 lead.

Rob Robbins (Stevens) came into the game with an ERA of 0.43, but did not have a strong outing. He pitched 3.1 innings, allowed 11 hits, and 6 earned runs. Tanner Geisel (Southeastern Community College) had the most production offensively for the Pilots. He had an RBI double, and a run scored in the sixth inning.

The Mohawks scored early to take a commanding lead, which is something they have done consistently during this stretch where they have won 12 out of 13. John Razzino (Franklin & Pierce) grounded into a double play with the bases loaded to bring in Marcus Carson (Kentucky) for the first run in the first inning. Joe Purritano singled to bring in Alex DeBellis (Lynn) for the second run of the inning. Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) then doubled, bringing home Purritano. Blake Logan followed that with a single to bring home Tracy to score the last of the four runs scored in the first inning by the Mohawks.

The fourth inning was another big inning for the Mohawks. Alex DeBellis doubled to deep left field and scored Marcus Carson. After Josh Gardiner (Radford) was hit by a pitch and John Razzino walked, Joe Purritano lined a double deep into right field which scored DeBellis and Gardiner. Brendan Tracy followed that by grounding out to second base which scored Razzino. Blake Logan followed that with another RBI single which scored Purritano.

Josh Gardiner had a 2-run double in the fifth inning to round out all the scoring plays for the Mohawks.

Andy Ward (Florida St.) relieved E.J. Ashworth in the sixth inning, and allowed all three runs that the Pilots scored. Tanner Geisel had an RBI double that scored Jack Gerstenmaier (Virginia). Austin Clock (Cortland) grounded out to second and scored Braxton Wilkes. Samm Wiggins (Houston Baptist) singled and scored Tanner Geisel, and that would be the end of Newark’s rally.

In a battle of the aces, E.J. Ashworth came out on top. He earned the win, while Rob Robbins took the loss.

The Mohawks will play a home and home series against the Glens Falls Golden Eagles over the next two days. The Mohawks travel to East Field tomorrow night for a 7:00 PM game; then the two teams will meet at Shuttleworth Park on Tuesday for a 6:35 PM start time.
