Amsterdam One-hits Diamond Dawgs, Leaves with 3-2 Win and East Lead

Box Score

The Mohawk Valley Diamond Dawgs came into tonight’s game percentage points ahead of Amsterdam for the Eastern Division lead.

They would not leave that way, as Mohawk Valley could only manage one hit on the Amsterdam Mohawks on Wednesday night, but managed to score two runs on wild pitches. It was not enough, however, as Amsterdam managed to wrest first place away from the Diamond Dawgs by the score of 3-2.

The Mohawks (17-7) would get on the board in the third, as singles by John Razzino (Cranston, RI/Franklin Pierce) and Josh Gardiner  (Culpepper, VA/Radford) would score two in their half of the third inning. They would add another run in the fourth inning, as JaVon Shelby (Lexington, KY/Kentucky) would score on another single by Brendan Tracy (Rumford, RI/Fairfield).

Mohawk Valley (15-7) would not be denied, as they would score Gus Craig (Eugene, Oregon/Columbia) and Zane Smith (Ilion, NY/Bryant) on wild pitches by Amsterdam starter Zack Brown (Seymour, IN/Kentucky). Other than the wild pitches, Brown was stellar for the Mohawks, combining with Thomas Hackimer (Floral Park, NY/St. John’s), Daniel Castro (Monroe, NY/SUNY Albany) and Zach Breen (Watervliet, NY/Barton) to one-hit the Diamond Dawgs. Brown would get the win for the Mohawks, while Bryan Greig (New City, NY/Mercy) dropped his record to 1-2 this season with the loss for Mohawk Valley.

With the win, Amsterdam moves one game ahead of Mohawk Valley for the lead in the PGCBL Eastern Division and extends their winning streak to five games and 15 out of their last 16.

The Diamond Dawgs will try to get back on track on Thursday and provide some early 4th of July fireworks as they host the West Division-leading Watertown Rams. The Mohawks will try to extend their winning streak to six games as they head back to Shuttleworth Park to face the streaking Adirondack Trail Blazers.
