The Amsterdam Mohawks beat the Glens Falls Golden Eagles by a scored of 7-4. The game started out as a slugfest, but ended in a bullpen duel.  Amsterdam’s play was highlighted by back-to-back home runs in the second inning by Tommy Kain (Lynn) and Blake Logan (Auburn). 

Blake Logan and Tommy Kain were solid in the 6-7 spot for the Mohawks. The combination of the two went 3-for-5 with three runs scored, three RBI, two walks, and a pair of back-to-back jacks in the second inning. Although John McCarren (Wake Forest) let up a game-tying 3-run homerun to Colton Montgomery (Georgia College) in the top of the third inning, he powered through four innings in relief of starting pitcher Brandon Whitmore (Savannah State). McCarren went four innings, and struckout four while only allowing two hits.

The Golden Eagles drew first blood in the top of the first inning. Brandon Whitmore loaded the bases, and then walked Brian Fay (Siena) to score Danny Oliveri (Triton). Whitmore struckout the next two batters to get out of a bases-loaded jam.

The Mohawks put up four runs in the bottom of the second inning. It all started with back-to-back homeruns by Tommy Kain and Blake Logan. Joey Aiola (Marist) walked, and then Marcus Carson (Kentucky) doubled Aiola home. Jack Czeszewski (Illinois State) followed the RBI double with an RBI bloop single to centerfield.

Colton Montgomery tied the game up for the Golden Eagles with a three-run bomb in the bottom of the third inning off of John McCarren. 

The Mohawks put all three runs they allowed in the top of the inning back on the board in the bottom of the inning. Sean Grieser (Virginia Wesleyan) came in for Glens Falls’ starting pitcher Michael Harrington (Herkimer County C.C.) after Harrington loaded the bases. Blake Logan plated Joe Purritano (Dartmouth) with a sacrifice fly. After Alex DeBellis (Lynn) walked to load the bases, Joey Aiola was hit by a pitch to score a run. Then, Marcus Carson walked with the bases still loaded to score Tommy Kain to make it 7-4.

No more runs would come around to score the rest of the game. 

Michael Harrington took the loss for Glens Falls, and now sports a 2-2 record. All 13 of his earned runs this season have come in two outings against the Mohawks. Notably, Matt Sturchio (Triton) pitched 4.2 innings in relief, in only his second appearance for the Golden Eagles. He came into the game in the bottom of the fourth with the bases loaded, and got Alex DeBellis to ground into a soft 1-2-3 double play. He retired eleven straight batters, and only allowed one hit, while striking out four.

John McCarren earned the win for the Mohawks and moved to 2-1 on the season. 

Amsterdam hosts Albany on Thursday at Shuttleworth Park, and Glens Falls’ next game is in Albany on Friday.
