Box Score  Game 2

Utica – The Mohawks pitching staff was too much to handle for the Brewers.

Taylor Blatch (Florida State) threw a no-hitter and Kevin Guthrie (Brown) threw a 3-hitter as the Mohawks took both games of Sunday’s doubleheader at Murnane Field. The Mohawks and Blatch took Game 1, 7-0 and Guthrie lead the tribe to a 16-0 victory in Game 2.

Taylor Blatch cruised through the Brewers lineup as he only allowed 4 walks and 1 hit batter with 5 strikeouts in 7 innings of work as he improved to 5-1 on the season. Blatch is the third Mohawk to throw a no-hitter in the Keith Griffin era as he joins Kentucky’s Sean Bouthilette (6/22/10) and Oneonta’s Dave Filak (7/12/09) on that list.

John Razzino (Franklin Pierce) and Joey Aiola (Marist) lead the way offensively in Game 1 as each had 2 hits. Razzino scored twice and stole a base, while Aiola had a run scored and an RBI.

The Mohawks opened up the scoring with a 4 run, 4th inning as Joey Aiola and Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) both hit bases loaded singles to bring home runs. Blake Logan (Auburn) reached on an error by the third basemen and Jonathon Pryor (Wake Forest) grounded out as each drove in runs.

John Razzino made it 5-0 in the 5th as he singled with 2-outs and proceeded to advance to second and third on wild pitches and scored on a balk. The Mohawks added 2 more in the 6th as Jack Czeszewski (Illinois State) had a pinch-hit RBI double to score Blake Logan and JaVon Shelby (Kentucky) immediately followed with another double to plate Czeszewski.

Krystien Johnson-Battilana (Indian Hills CC) took the loss for Utica, as he falls to 1-3 on the season. Battilana pitched the full 7 innings allowing 7 runs (6 earned) on 9 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

In Game 2 the Mohawks exploded for 16 runs and Kevin Guthrie threw a complete game 3-hitter with 11 strikeouts.

Blatch’s no-hitter overshadowed what happened in Game 2, but Kevin Guthrie was every bit just as good, if not better. Guthrie allowed just 3 hits and 1 walk in his 7 innings of work as he improved to 2-1 on the season.

Jonathon Pryor, John Razzino, and Thomas Kain (Lynn) each had 3 hits. Razzino, Alex DeBellis (Lynn), and Joey Aiola each had 3 RBI.

Alex DeBellis hit a solo home-run in the 2nd inning, and then the Mohawks exploded for 10 runs on 5 hits in the inning. Utica’s starting pitcher Bryan DeJesus (Fisher) was chased from the game after allowing 9 runs (8 earned) on 6 hits and 3 walks in 2.1 innings. DeJesus took the loss as he falls to 0-1.

The Mohawks added 5 more runs in the 6th to make it 16-0 as Joey Aiola hit a 2-run single and Alex DeBellis, Tommy Kain, and Jake Salpietro (Fairfield) drove in runs.

With the wins, the Mohawks improve to 34-10 on the year and the Brewers fall to 9-35. Amsterdam returns to Shuttleworth Park tomorrow for a doubleheader with the Adirondack Trailblazers starting at 5:05 PM. Utica will travel to Glens Falls to take on the Golden Eagles in a doubleheader starting at 5:00 PM.
