The Amsterdam Mohawks defeated the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs 10-4 in their home opener at Shuttleworth Park on Wednesday. Amsterdam began the scoring in the bottom of the first when Yurchak singled and scored from first on a two-out double by Hunter Tackett (Auburn). The DiamondDawgs would respond in the second when JD Osbourne (Polk State College) doubled and then scored on Matt Pagano’s (Marist) ensuing single. The Mohawks would add two more in the bottom half when Tyler Kirkpatrick (Marist) singled, McDermott walked, and both came around to score on an Andrew Rouse (Marist) one-out single.

Mohawk Valley tied the contest at 3-3 in the top of the third on a two-out, two-run home run to right field off the bat of Osbourne. Amsterdam responded with two more in the bottom of the 3rd. Yurchak and Tackett worked back-to-back walks to start the frame. Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) loaded the bases on a bunt single. McDermott drove in Yurchak with a single, and Tackett would score on the ensuing walk issued to Tom Moore. Amsterdam would add two more in the 4th on a two-run double by Tracy. The lead increased to 9-3 in the 5th when McDermott scored on a single from Riley Mahan (Kentucky) and a Justin Yurchak walk drove in Rouse.

Amsterdam would add one more run in the 8th when Kirkpatrick reached on a dropped third strike and scored on an error by the DiamondDawgs second baseman Anthony Herrera (Louisiana-Monroe).

The win was picked up by Mike Wallace (Fairfield) as he improved to 1-0. The loss was charged to Payton Coddou (Louisiana-Monroe). He dropped to 0-1.
