Mohawks rally against Brewers to stay undefeated

By Cody Marshall

Box Score

A three-run 6th inning allowed the Amsterdam Mohawks to pick up a 6-4 win against the Utica Brewers. Tyler Kirkpatrick (Marist) and Aidan McDermott (St. John’s) each had RBI singles in the inning that put the Tribe on top for good.

Hunter Tackett led the charge for the Mohawks, going 3-for-4 with a triple, two singles, and two runs scored. Ryan Rosas (Corban University) paced the Brewers with a 2-for-4 night including a single, double, an RBI, and a run.

The Mohawks opened the scoring with one run in the bottom of the 3rd. After Andrew Rouse (Marist) reached on an error, a passed ball and ground out enabled him to move to 3rd where he would score on an RBI ground out by Drew Freedman (Wake Forest). Utica responded in the top of the 4th when Trey Bridis (Youngstown State) walked, then went first-to-third on an error committed by the Mohawks trying to turn a double play. Bridis would come in to score on a Mason McClellan (Fort Sumter State College) sacrifice fly.

Utica kept their foot on the gas in the 5th, scoring three runs and sending nine batters to the plate. Alex Core (Youngstown State) led off with a single and advanced to second on a ground out. After a Jarid Baldinelli (St. Bonaventure) walk, Rosas doubled to drive in Core. Bridis followed with an RBI single that brought in Baldinelli. Rosas would score on an RBI walk issued to McClellan, putting Utica ahead 4-2.

Drew Freedman reached on a dropped third strike to start the bottom of the sixth and the Mohawks followed with back-to-back singles from Justin Yurchak (Wake Forest) and Hunter Tackett (Auburn). Freedman would score when Tackett’s single was misplayed by the Brewers’ left fielder. Kirkpatrick and McDermott’s one-out singles drove in Yurchak and Tackett respectively to put the Mohawks on top 5-4.

The Mohawks would tack on one more run in the 8th when Kirkpatrick led off with a triple to deep center. McDermott picked up the RBI on his ensuing sacrifice fly to center.

The win on the mound went to Christian Maldonado (Fulton-Montgomery CC), who just joined the team earlier on Thursday. He improved to 1-0, pitching 2.1 innings in relief of starter Brad Schaenzer (Kentucky). The loss went to Utica starter Collin Gee (Oakland) who went 5.1 innings, allowing six hits, five runs (three earned), walked one and struck out five. Joe Nellis (Herkimer CC) shut the door in the 9th, picking up his second save.

The Utica Brewers (2-1) continue their early season road trip with a game at the Victor RailRiders on Friday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m. The Mohawks (3-0) look to pick up their fourth win in-a-row when they travel to the capital to face the Albany Dutchmen on Friday at 7:05 p.m.
