Mohawks Stun Dutchmen with Four-Run Ninth

By Cody Marshall

Box Score

Amsterdam pushed across four runs in the bottom of the 9th to take a 6-5 decision over the Albany Dutchmen Wednesday night at Shuttleworth Park. Tyler Kirkpatrick’s (Marist) walk-off-RBI single provided the difference for the Mohawks, who improved to 5-3.

Justin Yurchak (Wake Forest) added two RBIs, going 2-for-5 with two singles and a run scored. Albany was led by Sean Aspinall (Azusa Pacific) who went 1-for-3 with a single, two runs scored, and an RBI. Nick Cioffi (Towson) had to settle with a no decision after going six innings and allowing just one run on four hits.

Albany jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first after Aspinall walked, and the Mohawks committed two errors on the same play when Nelin grounded into a fielder’s choice and reached. Back-to-back sacrifice flies ensued from Eric Mueller (UAlbany) and Michael Fitzsimmons (Ole Miss). The Dutchmen added to their lead in the second when Hunter Boose (Georgia Regents) scored on Aspinall’s sacrifice fly.

Amsterdam got on the board in the bottom of the 3rd when Riley Mahan (Kentucky) led off with a double to left. After advancing to third on a wild pitch, Mahan scored on Yurchak’s RBI single to make it 3-1. Albany responded with a run in the top of the 4th when Aspinall singled and came around to score a batter later on a throwing error by the Mohawks pitcher.

Andrew Rouse (Marist) and Drew Freedman (Wake Forest) led off the bottom of the 7th with back-to-back hit by pitches. Rouse would score when Yurchak grounded into what might’ve been a double play, if not for Freedman’s break-up slide that forced an errant throw on the relay.

Albany added another run to make it 5-2 in the top of the ninth when Grayson Lewis (Rice) reached on an error to get to second and scored two batters later on Jesse Cooper’s (Seton Hill) RBI groundout.

The Mohawks then sent eight batters to the plate in the ninth against Cooper, who had moved from second base to the mound. With the bases loaded and one out, Yurchak singled to score Scott Manea (NC State) and cut the deficit to 5-3. Hunter Tackett (Auburn) drove an 0-2 pitch down the third base line to plate both Rouse and Mahan to tie the game. After Brendan Tracy (Fairfield) was intentionally walked, Kirkpatrick singled up the middle to walk it off as Yurchak scored.

The win went to Jake Mielock (Tampa), who improved to 1-1. The loss went to Jesse Cooper, who dropped to 0-1. Albany (4-3) looks to bounce back tomorrow at home against the Victor RailRiders at 7:05 p.m. Amsterdam will go on the road to face the Mohawk Valley DiamondDawgs at 6:35 p.m.
