Box Score
The Amsterdam Mohawks (9-3) have now won 5 games in a row following Wednesday’s 2-1 victory over the Adirondack Trail Blazers at the Smith Sports Complex in Boonville.
The Mohawks had only 5 hits in the game and Drew Freedman (Wake Forest) scored twice to provide all the offence the Mohawks would need. On the mound Brad Schaenzer (Kentucky), Christian Maldonado (FMCC) and Kyle Smith (NC State) combined to allow 1 run on 6 hits.
Freedman reached base on a leadoff walk in the third inning and came in to score on a wild pitch by Trail Blazers starter Tommy Eng (Adrian). Two innings later, Freedman leadoff the fifth with his first home run of the season to make it 2-0.
Eng (1-1) was the tough luck loser as he allowed just the 2 runs on 5 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts in 6 innings of work. Chris Doughty (Holy Cross) pitched 2 hitless innings and Joe King (Youngstown State) pitched a hitless ninth to finish the game for the Trail Blazers.
Brad Schaenzer (1-1) started for the Mohawks and picked up his first win of the season. He went the first 5 and allowed 1 run on 6 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts. The only run Schaenzer allowed came in the fifth inning when Brad Jones (Florida Tech) hit a deep home run to center field to cut the Mohawks lead to 2-1.
Christian Maldonado quieted Adirondack’s bats as he pitched 3 perfect innings with 3 strikeouts. Kyle Smith earned his first save of the season as he struck out 2 in a perfect ninth.
The Mohawks are back at home tomorrow to face the Saugerties Stallions in a doubleheader. Game 1 will start at 3:30 PM and be a continuation of Friday’s game which was scoreless and suspended due to rain in the second inning. Both games will be nine innings, with the second game starting approximately half an hour after the conclusion of the first. It will be The Recorder Night, Chocolate Night, Broadalbin-Perth Night, Capstone Night and Thirsty Thursday BOGO drinks sponsored by Saratoga Eagle and The Rockton House.
