The Amsterdam Mohawks took two games by scores of 8-4 and 3-2 from the Saugerties Stallions to improve to 11-3 and extend their winning streak to seven games on Thursday night.
Handsome Monica (Arizona), Hunter Tackett (Auburn), and Justin Yurchak (Wake Forest) each slugged homers to lead the Amsterdam Mohawks to an 8-4 win over the Saugerties Stallions in game one.
Tackett finished the game 2-for-3 with a single, home run, two runs scored, and three RBIs. Sean Adler (NC State) managed to spin a gem in his first start. He went six scoreless innings, allowing just two hits, three walks, and struck out five.
After singling to start the bottom of the 2nd, Tackett would score on Monica’s sacrifice fly. The Mohawks added two more runs on Monica’s two-run blast that drove home Tyler Kirkpatrick (Marist) to put the Tribe up 3-0. Tackett would provide more offense in the bottom of the 5th as he hammered a pitch for a three-run home run. Riley Mahan (Kentucky) and Yurchak would trot around to score. Newly acquired Craig Dedelow (Indiana) drove in fellow Hoosier Macy Holdsworth (Indiana) in the bottom of the 6th to extend the lead to 7-0. Yurchak capped the scoring for the Mohawks in the 7th as he blasted a solo home run to right field.
Saugerties would respond with four runs in the final two innings, including three runs against Joe Nellis, who had gone five straight appearances without conceding a run.
Adler picked up the win to move to 1-0 on the season, while the loss went to Joe Ducoing (St. Thomas Aquinas), he dropped to 0-1.
In game two, Saugerties struck first when Joe Venturino (Ramapo) homered to left to put the visitors up 1-0 in the top of the 3rd. Amsterdam’s Craig Dedelow responded with a home run of his own to right center to tie the score in the bottom of the 4th.
Amsterdam would take the lead in the bottom of the 6th. Scott Manea (NC State) and Macy Holdsworth (Indiana) led off with back-to-back hit by pitches. Manea would score on Drew Freedman’s (Wake Forest) RBI single. Two batters later, Hunter Tackett would pick up an RBI single of his own to make it 3-1 Mohawks.
Saugerties would add one more run in the top of the 8th when Pat Dorrian (Herkimer) came around to score on a ground ball from Dylan Sprague (Fairleigh Dickinson) that resulted in an error on the shortstop. The Stallions threatened with two runners reaching in the 9th, but failed to cash in.
The win went to Anthony Romanelli (Marist) who is now 1-0. The loss went to Nick Williams (Union) who dropped to 0-1. Tyler Smith (Canisius) picked up his first save of the season.
The Stallions and Mohawks will meet again in Saugerties on Friday night for an East Division matchup scheduled for 6:35 p.m.
